When Elektra awoke, she wasn't sure at first where she was. It was so quiet. No mother yelling or Kreacher banging the pots and pans. It was nice. She got ready for the day, careful not to wake any of the other girls up and went down to the common room. At first, she thought it was empty, before she saw the familiar dark hair peeking over the top of an armchair by the fireplace. "It's quiet isn't it." Elektra said sitting down. Sirius nodded but didn't say anything. She knew he was nervous about something but she didn't pry, if he wanted to tell her he would. And sure enough, not even a minute had gone by before he broke the silence. "El, what are our parents going to do." He didn't say it but they both knew their parents would know by now about them getting into Gryffindor, they had eyes everywhere. The most eager pair being their cousin Bellatrix. "Well," Elektra began. "Best case scenario, we'll get a strongly worded letter. Worst case scenario, mother will be in the great hall demanding we be put in Slytherin. Most likely scenario is we'll get a howler."
Sirius laughed. "I wouldn't rule out her being in the great hall. She does love to be dramatic."
"You're talking about yourself again Sirius."
"Oh, shove off." He grumbled pushing his laughing sister away.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Why aren't you eating Elektra?" Remus asked when he noticed the small girl hadn't taken any food.
"Just don't want ashes in my breakfast is all." She shrugged.
Sirius grinned at her. "Mine or yours?"
"I meant the letter but good point."
The others looked in bewilderment at the twins. Before they all looked up as the owl post started to arrive. Elektra nudged her brother. "Any chance of just grabbing the letter and running?"
He sighed. "We both know she'll have used the exploding ones." A large screech owl swooped down dropping a bright red letter in front of the twins. Elektra held her breath.
"Brace yourselves."
"SIRIUS AND ELEKTRA BLACK!" The sound of Walburga Blacks screechy voice filled the room. "YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO THE HOUSE OF BLACK! HOW DARE YOU DEFY US AND GET SORTED INTO GYRFFINDOR! A HOUSE FILLED WITH NOTHING BUT BLOODTRAITERS! DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT COMING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS! UNGRATEFUL LITTLE BRATS! YOU'RE LUCKY YOU HAVEN'T BEEN DISOWNED!"
The hall was completely silent after the howler tore itself up. Everyone was staring at the twins in shock. Except their cousins of course, they were in stitches laughing. Sirius shrugged and went back to eating and slowly everyone else did too. But Elektra didn't. She was worried. She hadn't expected her mother to think about disowning them. But if they weren't being disowned then their parents must have something much, much worse in store for them. And Elektra wasn't looking forward to finding out what it was. "I'm going to class." She mumbled to Sirius before picking up her bag and walking out of the hall. Remus watched her walk out of the hall before noticing that she had left her timetable on the bench.
"Um, I'm just going to give this to Elektra." He told the others who nodded and went back to their conversation. Remus picked up the timetable and a couple of slices of toast in a napkin and followed Elektra out of the hall.
Remus looked around before spotting Elektra going up one of the staircases and ran after her. "Hi," he panted slightly out of breath. "You forgot your timetable."
"Oh," Elektra said surprised. "Thanks." Then she spotted the toast in Remus' hand. "You must be hungry this morning." She laughed.
"Actually, they're for you." "Oh, um, thanks." He handed the toast to her. "I just noticed that you hadn't eaten anything so-"
Elektra smiled. "Thank you." The two continued up to the Charms room for their first class. Chatting excitedly all the way.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"DECK THE HALLS WITH BOUNDS OF HOLLY!" "FA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA!" Remus looked at Elektra. "Do you think their ever going to shut up, it's giving me a headache." Elektra shrugged. "Oi! Boys! Would you shut up, it's only the 1st of December!"
"The first of Christmas little sis." Sirius said ruffling her hair.
"I'm older than you nitwit."
"I'm still taller." Sirius quickly dodged the copy of 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' which was swung at his head.
"Idiots," Electra grumbled. "Hey Remus there's a full moon tomorrow night, do you want to come watch it with me? You're always looking at those moon cycle charts anyways."
Remus looked slightly alarmed at her question. "Sorry, I um, can't I've to go visit my mother tomorrow, she's sick."
"Again?" Elektra asked surprised. "Wasn't she sick last month too?"
Remus looked increasingly uneasy. "It's um- a-a illness it's pretty serious."
"Right. Well tell her I said get well soon." Elektra went back to reading her book. She was now in the 'W' section. Next was werewolves.
The werewolf is found worldwide, though it is believed to have originated in northern Europe. Humans turn into werewolves only when bitten. There is no known cure, though recent developments in potion-making have to a great extent alleviated the worst symptoms. Once a month, at the full moon, the otherwise sane and normal wizard or Muggle afflicted transforms into a murderous beast. Almost uniquely among fantastic creatures, the werewolf actively seeks humans in preference to any other kind of prey.
Elektra blinked and reread the passage. She looked up at Remus and back at the book. Once a month? And tomorrow was a full moon. Now that she thought about it, she was pretty sure last month Remus disappeared on a full moon too. Maybe it was just a coincidence. "I'm going to the library." She told Remus.
"It's nearly curfew."
"I'll be back."
"W. w, w, aha! Werewolves." Elektra sat down at a nearby table and opened the book. She took a couple of notes as she read. 'Werewolves are often ill in the days before and after the transformation.' 'When werewolves don't have humans to prey on they will often attack themselves.' Elektra put down her quill and thought back to Remus. The scars he had all over him. How he always seemed to have new ones every month. Remus was a werewolf. She was nearly certain, but there was only one way to be sure.
Elektra climbed into the common room and was pleased to see that Remus was the only one left there. She walked over to him and sat in the armchair opposite him. "Remus, can I ask you something?" Remus looked surprised. "Sure." Elektra took a deep breath, here goes nothing. "Are you a werewolf?"
Remus looked shocked before his eyes started to fill with tears. "How did you know." She smiled at him. "You disappear every month on the full moon, you always come back with more scars." Remus laughed bitterly. "It was only a matter of time before someone figured it out. I guess I'd hoped I would last longer than three months."
"What do you mean?" Elektra asked him confused.
"Well you're going to tell everyone aren't you. Get me kicked out." Now it was Elektra's turn to be shocked. "Of course not! Why would I do that?"
"I'm a monster. A hideous monster."
The disgust in his voice broke Elektra's heart. She sat beside him on the couch and hugged him close to her. "No you're not. And for the record," she said tracing one of his scars with her finger. "I like them."
