Now that it was getting colder and colder, I've been having to layer up on clothing. I hate layered clothes. It caused me to sweat in doors and the extra effort of having to take them off when I was hot was way to much work. Not Riley though, she wore stylish sweaters or coats everyday and still managed to look amazing as the day before. I often looked weird or unkempt all the time.
"What happened to your friend? I haven't seen him in a while." I looked up at her sadly."He hasn't come back yet and I have no idea where he is." She looked at me sadly then proceeded to write in her notebook."What are you writing?"
Her face lit up when I asked,"Well, this is my dream journal, it has everything I want to do after I finish college next year." I smiled at her amused. She was just full of surprises."By the way, what happened to Seven?" I asked, but when I did she didn't look fazed at the question at all."Well, he hasn't come home yet and he disappeared, I'm glad he's gone actually." These past few days Riley smiles more often at me and she's always excited to talk about things she likes.
Seeing her happy makes me happy.
Suddenly there was a text on my phone.
It was from Daylyn. He wanted to meet outside in front of the school. I instantly rose from my seat to go to the main doors."Where are you going?" Riley yelled after me, she had a panicked face and she instantly dropped her things."Wait for me, I'll be back!" I yelled, but it didn't seem to calm her worried face.
I rushed to the entrance and forced open the doors open. Daylyn stood outside with a hoodie over his head, he had bags under his eyes, and he looked extremely pale."Day where have you been? Where'd you go?" I asked so many questions at once, all he did was tiredly rub his eyes. So I asked him again.
"Day, where have you been?"
He sighed and looked at the sky."After I left I was so angry at you. I felt like you didn't care. Even after that I realized you were all I had left. My mom has stage four cancer and the doctors are struggling to stabilize her. My dad did everything he could, but I couldn't bring myself to ask you for money after walking out on you like that, so I'm planning to quit school and get a job." I stared at him wide eyed.
"You don't have to drop out, I'll give you as much as you want, you know I don't need it anyway." I said as I walked closer to him."You don't understand Liam, you've never had to worry about anything in your life, you always had everything handed to you on a silver platter. I don't need your money, I'm dropping out of college and getting a job. I'm tired of cleaning up after you, I'm tired of covering for you, I'm tired of being your shield from the world." He smiled slightly and without realizing my eyes started to swell.
"Day, you don't have to do that anymore, I can handle myself just please don't leave me." My voice started to sound hoarse. I notice his eyes start to swell with tears as well, and I inched closer to him."It's better this way. It wasn't just going to be Liam and Daylyn forever right?"
"Day you're seriously not leaving right?"
"What do you think?"
And right before I could stop him, he turned around and started walking farther away from me. As if right on time it began to rain, and I began to feel heavy. This what I get for being so insensitive, I've got it easy. I can't complain.
Your a Have Liam.
This what I get from being such a jerk in high school. This is what I get for being insensitive and dumb, this what I get for thinking that I can get whatever I wanted. Why haven't I realized sooner? I was a burden to him, I was a someone he felt like he needed to take responsibility of and I never stopped him. Whenever I needed him he was there, whenever I wanted to complain he was there and what did I do to repay him?
I never asked him how he felt.
I never asked him what he wanted to do.
I never once considered his thoughts, all I did was talk about myself. Is this really how I treated everyone around me? I'm still the same Liam from high school. I'll never escape. The rain started to get harder as it fell from the sky. The air was cold and crisp and I could see my breath. I stood there, thinking about everything I've done until now. I thought about my parents and my brothers. I thought about all the hearts I'v broken in high school. Then I thought about Riley.
She doesn't deserve someone like me.
Riley, had been through so much and I popped out of nowhere thinking I could get with her because she was pretty. A girl like her deserves someone who wouldn't break your heart.
"Liam!" I turned to see Riley running towards me with a black umbrella. She raised the umbrella higher so it reached my head. She looked at me with worried face and without thinking I wrapped my arms around and hugged her."Liam? What happened?" I didn't say anything, but hug her tighter."Just stay like this with me."
"Whatever happened, I'm sure it'll be okay, it always gets better." She said and patted my back with her free hand.
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure."She said and rested her head on my chest. Her strawberry scented perfume seemed to comfort me as we stood in the cold pouring rain. Air was cold and my skin started creating cold bumps on my skin from my thin clothing.
Riley was the only sort of comfort I wanted and needed right now.
