" Shhh, don't wake her up!" Rose could hear her parents whispering as they crept up the stairs towards her room. Today was Rose's twelfth birthday, and she was exploding with excitement. As much as she would like to fly out of bed and open all her presents, she kept her eyes closed for her parents sake. When her door creaked open, she sat up slowly and made a big show of stretching her arms and yawning. Then she plastered on her best surprised face and asked innocently "What's all this?" Her parents stood at the foot of her bed, grinning like five year olds.
In her moms hands was a small little package, only about the size of a matchbox. In her dads hands was a tray with a plate of bacon and eggs, with a glass of milk on the side. "Don't tell me you forgot your birthday!" Her mom exclaimed, smiling even more now that she was convinced they had successfully surprised her. "Of course I didn't, I'm only joking. But seriously though, what is this?" "Well," her dad said, " we thought you might enjoy breakfast in bed while you open your gift."
He walked over and set the tray in Rose's lap, while her mom handed her the small package. Then they both hurried out of her room and down the stairs, whispering and giggling. Rose sighed and looked at her tiny gift. She hated to admit it, but she had hoped for a bigger gift than this. However, when she tore off the wrapping paper, she nearly had a heart attack. Inside there were two turquoise tickets, each labeled WONDERLAND in big, gold letters.
Rose stared at them in disbelief.
Wonderland was the biggest, most amazing amusement park ever. Sure, it was kind of suspicious, considering the fact that the 1,000 acres of land had been completely empty, and suddenly the park just appeared, but no one really gave that a second thought once they found out what was occupying the space. People seemed to be hypnotized by the amazing colors and endless amount of rides. Within days, everyone had flocked to the park to see if it really was as great as they said it was. And by golly it was. "The Best Amusement Park Ever Created" the media called it. And Rose McDonald had two tickets to go there.
