Damien walked slowly into the NYPD 21st Precinct. Just like any other Friday, Damien was the first one there. He went to the breakroom and made himself a cup of coffee. While he was waiting for it to brew he heard someone else come into the building but he paid no mind to it. Lieutenant Charlie walked into the room as Damien's coffee finished brewing. The Lieutenant seem annoyed as she made herself cup of coffee. Damien looked at the Lieutenant.
"I would say good morning but it doesn't seem to be going good for you."
Lieutenant Charlie took a long drink of her coffee before replying.
"I got no sleep last night due to that stupid Afton case, and I have a news conference in..." She looked at her watch, "about 10 minutes."
Damien heard the front door open once more and a few minutes later Jeremy walked into the breakroom. Damien finished his coffee as Jeremy grabbed a strawberry frosted doughnut. Damien headed to his desk as Jeremy followed, finishing the doughnut in a few quick bites.
Damien took out the files for the Pizzeria Murders (as it had been dubbed) and the Afton case. He sat down in his chair and Jeremy sat down across from him. The Lieutenant dropped a file off at Damien's desk.
"Here's the files on all the Afton kids and Afton's old restaurant."
The Lieutenant headed off to the news conference grumbling.
The Afton children's file was slightly thicker than the diner's file. Damien picked up the children's file and opened it. Jeremy grabbed the restaurant's file and started reading it. They sat in silence for a few minutes reading. A few other officers trickled in to start the day's work. After a few minutes Damien got to the section in the file about Michael. He was the oldest of the three kids at about 13. He already had a juvenile record but it was mostly just skipping school.
"Damien."
Damien hadn't been paying attention to his surroundings. Jeremy cleared his throat and said Damien's name again. Damien set down the file and looked at Jeremy.
"What-"
He was cut off by a thick southern accent.
"Howdy Mister Damien!"
Damien looked at where the voice came from. Elizabeth was standing next to his desk with Peter hiding behind her.
"Elizabeth? Don't you guys have school today?"
"Nope! We all got today off."
Damien looked at Jeremy and raised an eyebrow.
"I checked and all schools in New York are closed today."
Damien shook his head and looked back at the kids.
"Does your father know that you two are here?"
"Nope, he was asleep on the couch when we left."
Damien realized what they were saying. I get his wife just died but getting blackout drunk with 3 kids to look after? Damien then realized that Michael wasn't with them.
"Where's your brother, Michael, was it?"
Elizabeth nodded.
"He said he was gonna go to the beach and for us not ta follow him."
Damien glanced back at the children's files.
"Is it ok if I ask you guys some questions?"
