Seraphina walked down the noisy, light blue halls of her school, Wellston. She occasionally would look to her sides, finding people staring at her every time. "What the hell happened to Seraphina? She used to be so perfect..." "Who told her it was a good idea to hang out with a cripple? She's so stupid." "She still thinks she's better than all of us. It makes me so mad!" Those were some of the many things she had listen to wherever she passed through any part of the school, her classmates expectations and degrading thoughts seeping into her mind, and no matter how much she did to simply ignore them, or just make it seem like she wasn't faced by them anymore, each one was still a sting to her fragile ego. Stings that just kept amounting, each hurting more than the last one, with nothing for her to do about it.
None of the students could say it to her face though. They only said such things whenever they thought she couldn't hear them. But she could, every single time. Their cowardice, which led them to not being able to say it directly, only reinforced to her a view that she, and all other high-tiers, hold since they are young: It's useless to deal with weaklings, the strong must always stand on top of them.
She kept walking, not having time to deal with any of the other sudents, as she had somewhere much more important to be. Remi's room.
After a couple of minutes she soon got the girl's dorms, she took a deep breath before going in, and, after a moment of hesitation, she went straight towards Remi's room. Seraphina knocked on the door. No response. She did it once more, and yet again, got no response. "Remi, it's me, Seraphina, please open the damn door, we have to talk." Said Sera, a little annoyed, although having already expected a something like that to happen.
After a couple of minutes of waiting, Seraphina heard the door being unlocked, and it was opened slightly, inviting her to go inside. She gulped, that was unexpected. After fully opening the door, she went in, yet couldn't see anything. After stumbling around for a few moments, she called for Remi, "Remi! Where the hell are you?! Why are the lights off?" She asked, and her answer did come, just not with words.
Without warning the lights were turned on, and what Seraphina saw made her heart drop. The cheerful, lovely Remi was staring at her with the same lifeless eyes that she had since arriving back at Wellston. She hadn't been taking care of herself, that was obvious, since Seraphina could have sworn the clothes Remi had on were the same ones she had last time she saw her, three days before.
"Sorry I didn't answer the door immediately, Seraphina, I thought it was Arlo again, he's been coming three times a day since I got here, mostly just to scold me for not going out..." Remi said, it was obvious something horrible must have happened to her if she, of all people, was acting that way. And about Arlo... She would deal with him later.
"Sorry to hear that, Remi, but don't worry, I'm not here to scold you, not in the slightest, I just want to know what's wrong... Normally I woudn't try to do this, but you're my friend, and it's more than obvious that something is going on. I'm here for you, Remi, let's talk." Seraphina said, getting closer to her, and then giving her a hug, doing her best to ignore her smell, which implicated she probably hadn't even showered since she got back.
Remi stayed quiet for a second, then returned Seraphina's hug, she was desperate for any real affection from someone since she was thrown in those "reeducation classes", so she appreciated her friend's actions. "Thanks, Seraphina, it's just that... A lot has happened, even before I left... Want to sit down?" She said, pointing at the couch in her living room.
Seraphina nodded and sat down, with Remi sitting not too far from her. "Well, Remi, what are some of these things that have happened? Do they... Do they have to do with your family?" She said, and Remi's eyes widened for a moment. Guess John was right, thanks for the tip, buddy.
Remi clenched her fist, a mix of emotions and thoughts were running through her head. Should I tell her? What if she doesn't believe me? Yeah... There's no way she would believe what actually happened... I guess just telling her about Rei is the best idea for now. "Well... Around a week before I left, Rei, my older brother... He was murdered." Remi said, her voice cracked while saying that last sentence, and she clenched her fist harder. Even after all she had gone through, her brother's memory still made her want to drown herself in her own tears.
Sera was shocked. She had heard so many great things about him, specially from Arlo, the thought of him dying was... Unsettling, if people that strong could die, just like that, what about her?... Still, she hugged Remi once more, trying to give her some support. "I-I'm so sorry, Remi, that's just horrible... It sounds like you admired him a lot..." She wanted to say more, but what was there to say? Words of encouragement wouldn't give Remi her brother back.
After a moment of silence Remi hugged Seraphina back, trying her hardest to not start to cry a river in her friend's shoulder. If only I could tell her everything... I'm sorry, Seraphina, I really wish I could tell you... "Hey, Seraphina, thanks for caring about me, I really appreciate it, but... I need to be alone right now, but I promise I'll come out tomorrow and go to class. I'll even talk to Arlo, I haven't told him about Rei yet, since every time he comes he doesn't even let me talk, but I'll make sure to do that tomorrow." She said, still trying to hold her tears.
Silence engulfed the room once more. Seraphina sighed, knowing there wasn't much more to do, so she simply stood up, and patted Remi's head. "I understand, Remi, but remember, I'm here for you if you ever want to talk." She said, then left the messed up room, closing the door behind her without making much noise.
Well that sure was... Something. I guess that explains why she was so blatantly depressed. And that idiot, Arlo... I'm going to see him, right now. Sorry John, I know I promised to hang out, but we'll do it tomorrow, evn if I do feel bad about ditching you. Seraphina grabbed her phone and texted John. "Sorry, I won't be able to hang out, talk to you tomorrow, John." And with all that settled, she headed towards her room to change, and then, she was going to go to Arlo's house.
Remi, on the other hand, was still in that couch. The tears she held while Seraphina was in the room were falling non stop. Why did this happen to me?! I didn't deserve what happened to me... Rei didn't deserve what happened to him... Why?!... Wait. I know why... It was because of that damned book, Unordinary... Yes, it's all the books fault, if I hadn't read it... If Rei hadn't read it, this wouldn't have happened, he would still be alive! Who wrote that book again? Some guy named W. H. Doe, right?... I have to find him. I have to make his life miserable. His, and that everyone he loves. Yes, that'll do it, right?! Right?! I-I'm sure... I'm sure Rei would be proud of me if I did that... Right?
With a new "plan" in mind, Remi's mind was starting to work again. She grabbed her phone, and started to look through her contacts. She soon found the one she needed, the one that could find anything she wanted. It was time to call Isen.
