I stand in the kitchen flicking through the mail, opening bill after bill, glancing across the words which are quite common on my latest bills "Cole, Elizabeth" my name and
"overdue notice!" in big bold red letters. I sighed picking up my phone to call my best friend. I held my phone to my ear and stuffed the envelopes into the top draw of the kitchen counter. "Eliza! You gotta be quick, I'm just on my way out" my best friend spoke on the other line. I propped myself up onto the counter "Okay, okay Gracie! Are you sure you can't move in with me?" I grinned with hope."I wish, but living with my parents and paying minimal board is all I can do right now. All my savings were wiped after I bought my new car."
"It was worth a try" I signed, "I can't afford to live here anymore, I'm going to have to move out" I loved it here, and Grace knows that, everyone I know, knows it. It was a great find and I'd hate to give it up.
"Stop moping around and advertise for a wanted roommate. It won't take you long to find someone, you know that apartment is a great catch."
"What if they're a serial killer though?" I replied sarcastically while hoping down from the bench and looking in the fridge, hearing Gracie laugh on the other end and quickly mutter "Look, just give it a try, it'll be fine. I'm heading out now so I have to go but good luck" and with that the line was dead.
I groan as I saw that there is nothing in the fridge, I look in the freezer, nothing other than some frozen veggies. I move back to the fridge hoping something magically would appear but still nothing other than some milk and some not-so-fresh produce. I look in the pantry and find a cup of noodles, I boil the kettle while I run upstairs to grab my laptop from my room. Placing the laptop on the coffee table and walk into the kitchen and pour the boiled water into the cup. I walk back into the lounge room with the noodles in my left hand and the fork in my right and place them down onto the coffee table and grab my laptop. Switching the tv on for some background noise and type 'www.facebook.com' into the URL bar on my web browser. I'm going to take up Grace's suggestion and look for a roommate, I type 'Roommate Wanted! Needed ASAP, inbox me for more details' I looked over what I had written and decided to attach a few photos of the apartment from when I had first moved in a few months ago.
I clicked 'post' as I was thinking about back then, I was getting steady shifts and great tips at work but recently I haven't been working as much because my boss hired another waitress. It's amazing how those few months had changed and how drastically it's changed my financial situation. I've considered changing my job but I wasn't willing to look for another job while working because I didn't want to lose my current job because of that. A roommate wasn't really something I wanted to do because I wanted to be completely independent at 19 but I'm willing to have a roommate to keep the apartment, even if it means I'm not as independent.
I pick up my cup of noodles and start eating them while I scroll through my newsfeed, I got a few likes on my status and an inbox from a few concerned friends but no one is yet interested, it's only been a few minutes so I'm not complaining. I finish off my noodles and closed the lid of my laptop while I turn off the TV and get up to put the foam cup in the bin. I jog upstairs and walk into my room. I flop onto my double bed and reach over to turn the table lamp on, I sit up placing my phone which has been in my pocket onto the bedside table. I walk into the bathroom across the hall and remove my shirt and my bra and throw my clothes into the laundry basket I throw on a white bed tee and remove my pants. I hear phone from my room as I pulled out my makeup wipes from the top draw. I ran into my room and picked it to see I had a message from Grace which read 'call me' so I dialled her number.
She answered immediately "Who's the best friend ever?" Grace boasted. I laughed, "I don't know? You? Nah, can't be, who?" I smirked at my own comment.
"Oh! I'm offended. I guess now I can't tell you the great news"
I reply walking back to the bathroom "Kidding, obviously you are. Now tell me"
"Well, if you insist"
"Oh my god Gracie, just get on with it" I reply laughing at her wit.
"Okay, okay! So, I was out and about tonight running some errands for Mum, right..." she paused and waited for me to give an indication that I was listening, I mutter an "uh huh" and she continues. "So, anyway I was shopping and the check out chick was taking forever so I looked over to the public notice bored, you know, where people put up flyers and things usually about animals?"
"Yes, Gracie, I do know. What does this have to do with you being a best friend? You didn't get me a cat did you? I can't have pets at the apartment."
"No, no, no, I didn't. Promise, something better!"
"What can be better than that?" I reply while putting her on speaker phone and setting my phone on the counter top. I grab a make up wipe out of the packet as Grace replied "A roommate... Well a potential candidate, I guess" I laugh "Already?"
"Yes, He's cute too."
"How did you find someone so quickly?"
"Well, like I said, I was looking at the notice board and he was there, pinning up a flyer which read 'Need a room mate?' So, I went up to him and had a lil' chat with him and he seemed pretty legit so I gave him your number and your address. I said he could go have a look at the place and meet you tomorrow, because I know you're just going to mope around all day if you don't have something to do. He should message you tomorrow before he comes"
"What? You did what? Oh my god Grace!" I rubbed my face a bit harder with the makeup wipe frustrated with both Grace for giving that guy my address and the mascara that has decided to make my face its home.
"What's the problem?"
"You gave my address to him Grace!"
"Sorry! He's nice, I think you'll like him. He'll message you before he comes so maybe message him saying do you want to meet up for coffee first"
"Good save, I'll do that then. I gotta go, I'm about to head to bed. Thank you, the sooner the someone moves in the better I guess."
"Bye Eliza"
"Talk soon" and the line was dead. I continued removing my make up and when I was finished with that I brush my teeth, I scroll through my Facebook feed while I do this, no one has messaged me with interest about the apartment yet, it's a Friday night, everyone is probably out having fun and not hunting for apartments. I quickly run a brush through my brown hair which has natural waves in it, It's currently shoulder length but it frames my face at the front. I turn around looking back towards the mirror having a good look at my butt, I mean, who doesn't do this? I turn back around and smooth out my white bed shirt that hangs off my boobs, I'm quite slim but if I was any heavier I'd look like a stump because of my height. I'm around 5'2, I maintain my weight by running two, to three times a week and I also try to eat healthy without starving myself.
I walked myself to my bedroom and flopped back down onto my bed, I plugged my phone in, switched off the lamp and slowly fell asleep.
