Author's note: This section is scary. As to the title of the chapter, the word 'Desolation' fits into the Mania of the Zombies World-not in Peter Jackson's third 'Hobbit' fantasy movie...

Jessica Harding, the cousin of Gretel Harding, peered at the glass window.
She wasn't here...nor there...
...Nor anywhere.
The Zombies that fed on her gay cousin's parents back in 2012, hurt her family. Her flaming red colored hair was dyed; her blue eyes gave off heat; her blue skirt fell down her slender legs; her white bra was new, since she was now 13.
She gazed at the Risers feeding on Mister Garger, the 66 year old neighbor's face. She heard the ripping sound; she heard the crunching noises.
Because her parents were survivalists, she was forced to watch the reality tv cable show, 'Survivalists in the Zones', in which stupid people was prepared for World War III.

She heard about the Zombie Only Zones, (or ZOZ's); she heard about the dangerous places that in the early 1970's to 1980's, was full of gangs...not the raving Undead.

She reached for the submachine gun...and blasted into the Riser's chest open. Blood splattered the cold walls; blood splattered the rotting, dead, flesh...
...as more Zombies ran towards the Zone Buildings.
And she fired until there were 26 Risers' bodies piled up into the walls. Some had their cerebellums crushed; some had their chest explode, like the b horror movie she saw at The Rate Cinema called 'Gang Zombies and Alien Monsters', a 1980 movie that was rated PG-13. Of course, the outrage by parents over the movie caused it to be a cult classic...And remained so once it hit BluRay stores, to prevent illegal downloads of the movie by websites who were shut down thanks to tougher US Government guidelines...by the different kind of pirates of the digital kind.

Amie Harding suffered.
Her intestinal tract was blackened by disease.
"The esophagus is dead; the abdominal cavity is dead. Bowels are blocked; damaged. I can't pee; I can't go to the Ladies' Restroom...
..."It's called 'Abdominal Adhesions'. My liver, heart, and blood are clotting; my food intake is gone. Your father sliced his arm off with a machete because they bit him; your father died in a pool of vomit. And I shot his cerebellum...And prevented him returning as a Zombie. Death comes to you, honey; death".

And she passed away...
...And left her daughter to fend for herself...in the desolate World of No Town, USA...Between LA and New York.

On the barren, nihlistic, road, was death.
Death didn't wear hot leathers; death was death.

Jessica stared at the blood-red sky.
Its rays was blotted out by the New Day.
Nothing out of whack happened last year.
It was a stagnant impasse.

And, for Jessica, being stagnant meant death of a new kind.

The sign read:
MANIA STARTED HERE
Jessica breathed hard...
...Then stopped.
The darkness engulfed her now.
She took in the landscape...
...And continued walking alone...
...Into the darkness.

The soldier aimed his submachine gun at Jessica.
"This is private property".
"There's no sign".
"They tore it open".
"The Risers".
"Yes!".
And she nodded.
"Who are you?", she asked.
"Private Donaldson. USMC".
"Really".
And she didn't see any Military badge on him.
And knew that he wasn't enlisted; he was rogue.

"You're not a true soldier".
"Hey, I am...".
And then someone shot him in the back...
...And his body thudded to the hard ground.

The killer was a teenage Zombie girl Riser...who was gripping a rifle in its rotting right hand...And begun to feed on his face with its sharp, dead, gnashing, teeth...that was stained in fresh blood. Jessica fired three times into the Zombie's chest.
Yet more blood splattered the ground; yet more Zombies' blood was splattered near her feet. She backed away...
...Then fled the Zombie Only Zones, (or ZOZ's)...
...And vowed to survive the New World.
