The next day, Karma and Y/N both skipped, choosing to spend their time in the woods instead.
"Hey, Karma?" She asked, "are you and Okuda close?" He couldn't tell what she was thinking, Okuda was definitely good at chemistry, and she was more bearable than other girls, but he got the idea that Y/N wasn't asking out of jealousy.
"Nah, not really, she's closer with Takebayashi, both being science geeks and all." He grinned, looking sideways at her, but instead of grinning back, she ignored him, sending a text instead.
"Ah, that's a shame, we don't have many good scientists in the union, and we need more experiments on the octopus' DNA, as well as seeing if we can modify the BBs into a gas or liquid too, but then we've also got to be wary of...." She continued to mutter, so caught up in her monologue, she didn't see that they had reached the E class campus, and tripped over the sudden change in terrain,
"Look out!" Karma yelled, grabbing at her arm, she just slipped through his fingers. He needn't have worried though, she got up immediately after and brushed herself off, flashing him a grin,
"Whoops, looks like I twisted my knee," she laughed
"Y/N are you ok? Do you need to lean on me or something?" Karma asked, tentatively reaching out towards her, the smile she gave him made his heart flutter slightly,
"Nah, the best way to cure an injury is to walk it off." She was interrupted by a voice that came from behind them,
"Wow! What great advice Scythe! How come I never thought of that?!" Karma turned to see a boy about their age, with striking blond hair, reclining in a wheelchair,
"Corey, I swear to god if you fall out of that chair I will leave you here." Y/N groaned, he noticed that there was no malice in her voice, they talked like old friends.
"Uh, Y/N, do you wanna introduce us?" Corey asked, gesturing vaguely to the redhead,
"Oh, right! Karma, Corey, Corey, Karma, Karma, Corey's the co-head of the union, he used to be the only head, but then he made us memorise the entire script of Finding Nemo and recite it as a pledge of allegiance." She shuddered at the memory, "He used to be the sixth best underage assassin, but then he got into an accident, so now he's down to number 14, shame."
They talked so casually about global assassin rankings, Karma found it hard to believe that a boy in a wheelchair could be the fourteenth best underage assassin though, how would that even work?
"Uh, Karma, do you mind letting us talk in private for a bit?" Y/N asked, he obliged, choosing to go annoy Terasuka instead as Y/N turned back to her old friend,
"Corey, why are you here?" Her voice was perfectly level, but the blond could tell that she was shaken by his appearance. He had never appeared in the middle of a job before,
"I, well, I came to check up on you, normally you've made more progress by now, so I came to see if something was wrong." He rubbed the back of his neck slightly, chuckling nervously, she noticed his lies easily,
"Bullshit. You locked yourself out again, didn't you?"
"Can I borrow your keys? I'll leave it on the latch for when you get home!" He pleaded, she sweatdropped,
"Come on, I have spare keys in my bag, dumbass." They made their way into the classroom, luckily the class had just been dismissed, and they were all packing up ready for lunch when the two entered,
"Well, well, well, I never thought I'd see the day Hephaestus himself wheeled into my classroom!" Professor Bitch crowed, the rest of the class turned to watch the newcomer as Y/N dug around her bag for the spare set of keys, she found them and tossed them to the front, where Corey caught them easily,
"Next time check before you leave the house," she reprimanded,
"Its not my fault! You saw how hectic breakfast was! There was scrambled egg on the wall!" She rolled her eyes,
"That's nothing new, have you met he twins?"
"Hang on, you two live together?" Nagisa interrupted, "like, with all the assassins in your union?" Y/N rolled her eyes,
"Yes, and they're all such idiots I have to carry around four sets of spare keys since I'm the only one who doesnt lose them!" She glared at Corey, who just smirked,
"If you didnt want the responsibility, you shouldn't have been so responsible- ack!" He was cut off when Y/N threw another set of keys at him, "Hey! Didnt your mother teach you not to throw keys at disabled people?" She just stared at him
"Why the fuck would she teach me that?"
A vein in Corey's forehead popped, "It's good manners!"
"We kill people for a living," she reminded him, rolling her eyes "plus, you're one to talk, I literally saw you steal candy from a baby, then throw money at it to stop it from crying!"
The class watched this exchange like an engaging tennis match, some more entertained than others,
"Wow~ Y/N sure acts different when shes around friends." Nakamura grinned, Y/N shot her a glare,
"We aren't friends, he's just literally the only person who can survive pissing me off since I owe him" that was a lie, of course, any assassin in the business could tell you how close the two were, the entire union was like a big, dysfunctional family, just with less adults, and more knives, guns, and deadly poisons. And in the centre of it all, stood some of the most famous assassins alive, they took separate jobs, but everyone knew that to cross one would be to cross the other. Their union was one to be feared, full of the most deadly children on the planet. Scythe, Hephaestus and Harvester. All were feared, though some more than others. Even having been Abandoned, paralysed or mutilated, their names struck terror into the hearts of anyone with connections to the assassins underworld.
But she couldn't say that. So she let them believe what they liked, as she began to formulate a foolproof assassination plan.
