London- 1988
Nicole Smith never understood why things always seemed to happen when she wanted them too. She couldn't seem to figure out why the minute she wanted something to move across the room, they would do as the little voice in her head said to do.
She was only ten years old at the time and swore she must be just like the little girl in her favorite book. Matilda lived in a home where she wasn't wanted, and Nicole felt the exact same way. It wasn't that her parents were nasty to her like the ones in the little collection of pages, but they had a peculiar way of showing their love. They showed it by making her a very independent little girl, allowing her to cook for herself, clean her own clothes, which rather resembled the likes of the old lady that lived down the street.
Sure they loved her, what parents do not love their own children? Recently, however they've been progressively more irritated at the chaos little Nicole had begun to cause in the dainty yellow house at 17 Royals Avenue. The minute the little girl threw a tantrum the entire living room would begin to shake. Of course they knew all of the children at school called her "the freak who believed in magic", yet they never could understand the connection she had to the silly little children's book called Matilda, because honestly what ten year old still believes in trivial matters such as magic.
What Mr. and Mrs. Smith failed to realize is that there is in fact an entire world outside of the mundane lives they led. They had no reason to believe that a special castle, home to some of the world's most renown witches and wizards existed. Why would they?
Months followed of these peculiar incidents where things began to happen almost if by magic in the Smith household. Nicole's hair would randomly grow the day after getting it trimmed, the ragged copy of that god forsaken book seemingly repaired itself if it were to fall apart. If Mrs. Smith would so much as offer little Nicole a bite of the terrible green mess at dinner, it would proceed to vanish off of the child's plate.
Nicole, unbeknownst to her disheveled parents, would sit in her tiny room at night and watch the objects inside fly around her head as if they were attached to strings and she were the master puppeteer. For once in her life she was peculiar, and she loved it more than any of the "normal" things the girls did during break time at school. She loved being special, for it was a rare occurrence for a plain girl like her to be the star of the show.
None of them expected the strange old lady that arrived in the summer months, after her eleventh birthday. The woman introduced herself as Professor Minerva McGonagall. She said she had come to explain the strange occurrences within the four walls of that yellow house. She said that Nicole was a very special girl, and that she had been invited to a school to help her control her abnormal behavior. She was a witch, a fact that almost knocked poor Mr. Smith out of his chair. Surely this women must have been mistaken, for his precious daughter was just strange, and making stories inside her head because of that awful book.
The Professor was adamant of little Nicole's abilities and offered to take her shopping for the necessities of this school if she wished to attend, and Nicole wanted nothing more than to live in a world where she was as special as the magical lady had said she was.Upon seeing how delighted their little girl was, the Smith's allowed for her to attend this strange school called Hogwarts, hoping to help her get over the bogus dreams of using magic as quickly as possible. Within a few short weeks she returned with a trunk full of books, quills, money all in unusual coins, a cauldron, and an oddly shaped stick she called a wand.
What little Nicole had always dreamed of was finally becoming a reality, she was magical, and she would be going to a school for magic's children just like her. She poured over the books that had moving pictures of kids on brooms, and steam flowing out of cauldrons.
Soon September 1st, 1989 arrived. The Smith family made their way to King's Cross Station and looked for Platform 9 3/4. This is where our story begins.
