The first day of classes was one of the strangest days of Nicole's life. She had never expected to be attending to a charms class instead of her normal reading and writing classes at school. She walked along with Cedric, the first new friend she had made since arriving in the Hufflepuff common room last night. This girl with the brightest pink hair she had ever seen, talked to her and Cedric and told them stories of her pranks, which she had pulled with the twins' brother Charlie. They had stayed up far too late, laughing until they curled over with tears running down their faces. Tonks, the vivacious girl, told us we would have to join her on some of her wild adventures next time. Nicole was definitely more keen on that opportunity then Cedric was. She wanted nothing more than to make the same memories that someone who is so full of life had made. Tonks appeared to be the embodiment of life, as if the joys of living had combined themselves into a girl with bright pink hair.Once Nicole had finally escaped from the common room and made her way to breakfast, she bumped into the her favorite set of red haired twins. "Hey guys!" she smiled through her words, already feeling at home with the boys she met the day prior.
"Nic- wait is it okay if we call you that? You see, we call ourselves Gred and Forge, so we figured you would like a nickname," Fred rambled, taking the smile on the girl's face as an okay to continue the use of the new name for the short, brunette girl.
The trio made their way to the Great Hall for breakfast, joking the entire way. Upon reaching the doors, they parted ways to their tables, Nicole taking a seat next to Cedric and Tonks. The twins sat with their new friend Lee Jordan. The next few weeks followed the same routine, with the twins roping Nicole into various minor pranks along the way. The one that caused her the most stress and frustration is when they turned a Slytherin's robes bright pink and got detention and lost each of their houses' 30 points. For the most part, however, the three became extremely close, despite the different houses. Cedric and Nicole were not as close as they used to be, him more interested in girls and being the best person in each class than the tomfoolery that occupied a majority of Nicole's time.
Nicole remembered to write home as much as possible, though the responses seemed to indicate that her family was not as pleased at her magic abilities developing as she was. After every particularly hurtful letter she would look down and pull out the ragged book that had stayed in her bag since she packed it back in September. She found immense comfort in the muggle book, with Matilda slowly trusting and finding a motherly figure like Ms. Honey, leading her to hope that she would find the same love here at Hogwarts. One day was worse than the others, most likely due to the fact that her parents told her they wanted her to stay at Hogwarts for the Christmas holidays so as not to make their muggle friends uncomfortable by her strangeness. That letter ended in many tears and the twins sitting at the Hufflepuff table for all meals the next three days trying to cheer her up and convincing her to just "come to the burrow, mum will love to have you".
She could never do that, she never wanted pity, nor did she fancy intruding on another family's holiday. So when McGonagall came around and asked who was staying for the holidays, Nicole wrote her name, not missing that fact that she was one of five hufflepuffs who would be staying at the castle. The Professor took notice of the girl's solemn expression and her heart twinged. The thought of a child as bright and vivacious as her feeling so unwanted was not something that sat right with the elderly woman. She remembered the last time a student felt that way, and Tom Riddle was the prime example of what unwanted children could turn into. Immediately, McGonagall wrote to Molly Weasley, knowing that the little girl was quite fond of her two sons.
Once Christmas morning arrived, Nicole couldn't help but wake with the sun, delighted that the day had finally come. She looked toward the end of her bed once she felt a pressure laid upon her feet. Her eyes landed on a lumpy package wrapped in brown paper. Tearing it open, she saw it was a mustard yellow sweater with a big black 'N' in the center, a note fell from the wrapping. It read,
" Hey Nic! We really wished you had come to the Burrow with us, mum was bugging because you were at the castle without any of your close friends. So we asked her to make you a sweater, she makes them for all of us every year. We hope you like it, its your house colors too! We always get loads of sweets so we'll definitely bring some back for you.
See you soon!
Gred and Forge"
Nicole couldn't help but wipe a few tears that escaped her eyes. This was without a doubt the sweetest thing someone had done for her in a very long time. She threw the sweater on and ran to breakfast. McGonagall gave her a knowing look once she spotted the sweater she had seen on all of the Weasley children after they returned from holiday. Despite the fact Ms. Smith was wearing a yellow jumper, the only noticeable thing about her was the ginormous smile she wore upon her face, one that Minerva had not seen since the twins had left.
The days came and went until the twins returned to Hogwarts, and they did not disappoint with the sweets they had promised. The three of them all missed Potions, because they were sitting in the hospital wing dealing with the stomach aches from too many Chocolate Frogs.
Snow soon melted, and the trees on the grounds bloomed. Spring had arrived, and Nicole was dreading returning home to her boring muggle family. Of course she loved her parents, but she knew she would dearly miss her friends and the food at the castle. It was a free day, the professors wanted the student to enjoy the warm weather before the Easter holidays, yet another two weeks that Nicole was intending on staying at the castle. The twins were currently trying their hardest to convince her to join them at the Burrow, going as far as having Molly write her mother and all but forcing her to come.
"Come on Nic, it'll be fun!" George encouraged her. It was his turn to beg, since Fred had been on that duty for the past week.
"Fine! I'll come, but you promise I won't be a bother?" Nicole asked for the millionth time.
That is how Nicole found herself in her favorite jumper, waiting with her twins at the train station with the twins. "Fred! George! Over here!" the same motherly voice that Nicole heard back on her first day, called out. The boys pulled her towards their family.
Mrs. Weasley took no time in pulling the short girl into the warmest hug she had ever received. The woman led all of them to a blue car, with a red headed man sitting in the front seat. After the usual pleasantries, they made their way to the Burrow, and Nicole couldn't be more excited to spend the holiday with the boys who made her feel at home.
