"I have to go now Carmen," says my mum.
"Wait, mum!" I say. "What if they don't like me?"
"They will sweetheart. Everyone loves you!" she replies.
"Yea, but what if they don't like my accent?" I say to myself.
"What's that honey?" she asks.
"Nothing Mum." I sighed,"Love you," I say as I walk towards the 1st grade door.
It's small inside about the size of our garage, if you can call our garage small. We can store 3 cars in it. Ok, 2 and a half. But I'm not talking like slugbugs, I'm talking about full out pickup trucks. And a golf cart. Yes, my family plays golf. Not me, my family. I'm not that kind of person for sports. I'm more of an academic person. I moved to America from Britain so I guess that means I love tea and all that. Not really. I like tea but I love to drink coffee. Now wait, this is a prologue, not a get to know the character before the story actually starts. Let's talk about the first grade day again.
I walked into the classroom. There were lots of kids there. I was in my plaid skirt as well as the rest of the girls in the class. The boys were wearing khaki pants and a white shirt. I know, ugly right. Well apparently not to everyone else in this school. They seemed happy to be wearing these hideous uniforms and actually be at school. The only time I was actually excited to go to school was when I had a crush in kindergarten. We both liked each other and were planning to get married as soon as we get out of college. I was young and knew absolutely nothing about love. But this felt like it......... sort of. I had felt a lot of feelings before : hatred, humiliation, and even some excruciating pain. In Pre-school I broke my leg so I couldn't see my friends for a while. That's when my Pre-school crush decided to "dump" me. I was "heartbroken" as you Americans would call it. Again, I really didn't know anything about love but this made me really sad. I was ready to start fresh with a whole new set of friends.
"Hello," said the teacher. "I am Mrs. King. What is your name?"
"Hello Mrs. King," I said in my best 'kiss up to the teacher' voice. I was young but I knew exactly how to wrap every teacher around my little finger."I am Carmen. My, your name is so lovely that I could write it a million times and never get tired of it."
"We'll that is just too sweet of you to say," she responded, obviously pleased. "Just for that adorable comment, you get to sit by the 'coolest' ,as you children call it, child in the grade. Maybe you could teach him some manners."
She sits me down next to a kid who looks a lot like a troublemaker. "Luke, this is Carmen Jennings. She is going to be your table buddy. Carmen, this is the biggest troublemaker in the grade, Luke Ryan." Did I call it or what? This was going to be a long year.
