Everything was up to here.
The knife was at the tip of her throat. Her presence was vague like the tip of a needle. Era saw the anger on Rick's face, but she could still breathe. Even if she had a breath to fight, she would not give up.
"You are not a murderer." Era said. This was the first thing that came to mind. She was not wrong.
Rick seemed to soften for a moment. Yeah, maybes he could have entered his mind.
"Your secret will remain between us ... forever" the dim presence of the blade faded.
"You can't guarantee me that, can you?" Rick said. Era could not answer. The knife was now touching her neck. "I'm sorry ... after escaping from the past for so long, I can't let this ruin it."
Era knew that the warm liquid flowing down her neck was not sweat as the pressure of the blade was increasing. She wanted to see tomorrow, she had the right to stay in this world for a while.
There was activity in the darkness behind Rick. There was someone there. Era noticed the hair of the first young man. Despite the dim light, his red hair glowed. The boy put his finger over his lip, be quiet.
Era could do that.
The boy could have saved him.
Era could have bought him time.
Era turned her eyes to Rick. could stall whatever she said? The facts. Truths would surprise people.
"I don't have the ability to get in and out of people's minds as I want. The stranger who came to town offered me money in exchange for lying." Era was not considered to be lying. She didn't care if she would risk Pamir. She took a sigh of relief as the blade pulled away from him. At that time the boy was reaching for the wooden stick he saw on the side.
"Foreigner coming to town?" Rick stared with asking eyes. Era shook her head in approval.
"Yes ... The black guards must have sent him. They're after you." lie. lie. lie. The lies that came out of Era's mouth quickly brought her milliseconds. She should have run. Right now.
Rick's eyes opened in surprise. Era could use it. She looked at the boy and the stick in his hand.
Era quickly backed off before Rick knew what was happening. The boy hit Rick in the head with a stick. Rick put his hand to his head. Then it collapsed.
As the boy stared at Rick lying on the ground, Era felt he had never seen him before. She had spent every second of his seventeen years in this town. She knew everyone, which wouldn't be difficult for the less crowded place. She was sure the boy was not from here. Not from here meant danger.
Era had already pulled the dagger from her boot when the boy turned around.
The young man held up his hands. "keep calm and remember I saved you." what he said made Era pause, but the dagger was still turned to the boy.
"Who are you?"
.....
The boy did not know who he was.
He was born far from this country, he grew up there. Until the day when flames came out of his hands. He was cursed. At least his family, friends, all the people he knew and did not know called him so.
After his family rejected him, he began to live in misery on the streets of his home country.
One day someone handed him bread. The boy had not eaten fresh food for a very long time. He thanked the gods and the old woman who gave the bread while he was eagerly eating the warm bread. The old woman, unlike the others, did not look at her with disgust. The young women was talking while he eating the bread. He spoke of the empire behind the seas, where those like him were accepted by the people. She left after leaving him a few coins.
