During my time with Henry was the next best minute of my life. I remember getting into the car and sitting in the front seat, with my chin up high. I was proud of my owner, Henry. He took care of me and adored me dearly, and I loved him in return. He took the time to give me special attention despite his health problems. I always thought it would be him and I for the rest of my days. Life had other plans unfortunately.

It was near the beginning of February, when I had just won 1st place in the terrier group, and 2nd place in Best-In-Show. I was proud to show Henry what a great owner he was, and I was happy to be adored.

Then I fell asleep on the way home, right when Henry needed me most. There was a crash, not totalling the car, but it still seemed concerning. I had a splitting headache, and I wanted to sleep forever, but Henry was in trouble. He sat in his seat gasping and twisting. I didn't know what was wrong, and I couldn't help him. I barked, trying to get him to stop acting so weird, but he didn't listen. A few minutes later, Henry sat in his car seat, his dead eyes staring back at me. I would never forget that frozen look on his face.

After the accident I was taken to an animal care center. The past few days went by like a blur. I couldn't remember anything that happened, I was lonely. My master was gone, and I could've saved him. But I couldn't, I didn't, I didn't know what was wrong. I overheard some of the volunteers talking about me, apparently Henry's heart gave out while he was driving home. There really wasn't anything I could've done.

I was tired, I felt my spirits dry out. I haven't eaten in the past couple of days either, I didn't have an appetite. The pet center took gentle care of me, but I didn't want to be locked up anymore. I didn't want to be anywhere besides next to Henry's side. It was so sudden when someone opened my cage door. I peaked my head out, and there was a guy, not too much older than Henry, longer hair than Henry, and paler skin than Henry. He kneeled down to my level and put his hand out for me to sniff. I didn't know what to do then, I smelled his hand and instantly pulled away. I couldn't describe what his scent was like, it was awful. Then the man stood up to the lady and spoke to her about me. He was almost whispering so I couldn't hear him or something. They put me back into the cage and locked the door. I rested my head and closed my eyes, this was all too much for me. I didn't want a new owner, I wanted my Henry back.

8:04 am

I was abruptly woken up by someone opening my door. I wasn't supposed to be taken out at least until 8:30, and I wasn't supposed to eat until 9:00. I yawned a big loud yawn, and stretched a bit, I always loved waking up next to Henry's side. I remembered I wasn't by Henry's side, I was in a cold shelter. I open my eyes to see one of the volunteer workers reaching for my collar. I pulled back when I saw who was going to adopt me. It was that man with the long hair. He smiled at me, but not in a reassuring way, it was more possessive than positive.

When the man took the leash, I started to pull and protest. I didn't want to go anywhere with this creep, I would rather chew my tail off than live with him. The man yanked on the leash, choking me partially. The lady tried defending me, but the man growled at her and walked away, dragging me behind him. I found out sooner or later that the man's name was Leland.

He pulled me into his Toyota pickup truck, lifting me into the front seat. This feeling felt familiar, but instead of a warm happy feeling that made me wag my tail, it was a chilly and creepy feeling that crept down my spine. He locked the doors and turned his keys in the ignition. He pulled out of the parking lot and drove down the highway. He seemed kind to me on the drive, he occasionally pet behind my ears and spoke in a nice tone. He even put the window down, but I didn't feel like sticking my head out. I wish I took the opportunity when I had it.

I was fairly calm when Leland had parked, I just wanted to lie down my head and rest. I thought my head hurt then, it was going to hurt a lot more now. I walked up the dusty steps with Leland to his apartment, and what I saw before me was a prison.

Inside of Leland's apartment were about seven-eight different dogs, one female and seven males. Many of the dogs were fighting, and Margarine knew why. They were all in a rut, and they were fighting over who would get the female dog. The female was a portugese water dog, and she looked rather tired and beat up. I didn't know why she looked so upset, couldn't she bite anyone who got near her? Leland took off my leash and slammed the door behind us, locking it. There was a golden retriever, a schnauzer mutt, a border collie, a german shepherd, a samoyed, a labradoodle, and a bernese mountain dog. All of them looked like they hadn't been groomed in weeks, and some of them were bleeding from all the fighting.

"Alright, alright break it up!" Leland shouted.

All at once, the dogs went quiet and ducked their heads in shame. The female didn't however, she stood up straight and kept her glance towards me. I slowly walk over to the older female's side and sit next to her.

"Psst" I whispered.

The dog only glanced at me, not responding.

"Maggie you'll get a break for today, but Vizzie you're on deck today. Apollo you're with Vizzie. The rest of you, come with me," Leland announced with a raspiness in his voice.

"Maggie?" I muttered to myself.

"What's your actual name, kid?" the female spoke.

"M-Margarine..." I muttered.

She responded, "Elizabeth."

The portugese water dog stood up and slowly prowled to a closet on the other side of the bathroom. The german shepherd, Apollo, followed Elizabeth with a slobbery smile. He looked pleased, and excited, and I didn't know why. It hit me soon afterwards that Elizabeth was going to be bred.

I realized what Leland meant when he said he was going to give me a break, he was letting me get used to the house today. Tomorrow I was going to be mated for the first time.
