catheryn clutched the skirts of her long nightgown as she scurried down the hallway, a streak of white in the dark castle.
jacob's room was as far from her room and princess comforts as it could get. she had a ways to go before she reached the servant's quarters, but catheryn had walked this night trek enough times that she knew the route by heart, and even in her frantic state, kept a straight course until she reached his room.
catheryn didn't knock, just turned the knob and rushed in.
hurrying over to his bed, she shook the sleeping form with an urgency that might indicate a fire or some sort of life threatening emergency.
"jacob, jacob, jacob, jacob, jacob please wake up. i need you." she whispered frantically as she shook him. he rolled over in her direction. "wha...?" he murmured, prying his eyes open, and wiping the sleep from them. slowly, he pushed himself up onto his elbows. "cathie?" jacob stared at her, registering the terror in her gaze. "cathie? what is it? what's wrong?" he asked, feeding off of her fear, and becoming more worried by the moment.
"jacob..." catheryn crawled into the bed and tugged the sheets over her, moulding into his shape perfectly. jacob wrapped his arms around her. "what is it, angel?" he asked gently.
"i...i..." catheryn rolled over to face him. "you love me, right?"
"yes, of course i love you. i'll always love you. no matter what."
catheryn managed a wobbly smile at that, reassured. "i'm...i'm pregnant, jacob. i'm pregnant."
jacob didn't respond for a moment, and catheryn grew more anxious by the second. "please-please say something." she started to tear up.
"oh, angel, don't cry." jacob lifted a hand to her face, and gently wiped away the tears that were slowly dripping down her face. "cathie, don't worry. it'll be okay. it will all be okay. we'll figure this out. together. i love you, angel. and i love them, whoever they are too." jacob hugged her closer, and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
"jake?" catheryn murmured, overwhelmed by this show of love. "yes?" "i don't want to be alone with...it...right now." "then stay. stay, cathie, i'll keep you safe, i promise."
"stay with me catheryn, and i'll stay with you."
cathie smiled softly, and buried her face in his shoulder, breathing in the scent of her jacob. mint, and berries. the best scent in the world.
slowly, catheryn drifted off, snoring lightly. but jacob couldn't sleep, staring at the ceiling with desperate eyes, as if it might hold all the answers to the problems he'd created with his own hands. what was to become of them?
eventually, jacob's head slowly leaned over of its own volition, and he fell fast asleep, arms wrapped tightly around catheryn.
"i love you."
