That's when I heard a knock at my door. My thoughts scattered as I jumped out of my bed. Surely that couldn't be Victor. I quickly checked my vanity to make sure I looked alright just in case. My hair was still damp from the bath I took, and I was in my red satin night gown.
"Y/n! Victor's here!" Although I wasn't prepared for him, I strode down the stairs and towards the door.
"Hello Victor! What is it?" I ask politely. He looks a bit more tired than when I last saw him. Victor was pale and his eyebags heavy. He seemed a bit stressed, but was dressed rather fancily.
"Pardon the late visit, but may I speak with you...er, privately?" Victor glanced at my mother.
"Yes, of course! Come inside." I welcomed Victor into the house and escorted him to my room. After I shut the door, we sat across from each other on my freshly made bed. "So, may I ask what it is you-"
"I'm getting married," Victor blurt out. We sat there for a second, and I stared at him in disbelief. I quickly shook the silence and asked,
"To whom?"
"Well, trust me when I say I didn't have a choice." He fiddled with his tie. "My parents arranged me to marry a girl named Victoria. We have the money, and they have the status," Victor explained.
"Oh, well congratulations!" I knew he could sense that I was not entirely happy about the situation, but I didn't want to come off as discouraging.
"Y/n, I haven't gotten married to her yet."
"Oh, when will you?"
"Well that's why I'm here...I was supposed to marry her today, and during rehearsal I kind of ran away because I set her mum on fire and-"
"You what?"
"I was nervous! I didn't mean to!" A small chuckle escaped from me. Victor became defensive,
"I just couldn't get my vows right. I kept on forgetting and stuttering...y/n, I don't think I'm ready to get married. I don't even know her," Victor stared longingly in my eyes and my smile faded. I felt pity towards him and truly wanted to help, even if I didn't like the idea of him getting married to another woman.
"It's okay Victor," I rested my hand on his shoulder. "Here, why don't I help you with your lines," I added helpfully.
"Oh y/n, what would I do without you." Victor smiled thankfully. We gazed at each other for another moment and I cleared my throat.
"Okay, let's get started. What can you recite? Just pretend I'm Victoria." I gave him a warm smile.
"O-okay...er, with this hand...I will lift your sorrows." He nervously lifted his hand. "Your cup will never be empty, for I will be your wine." Victor's confidence grew as he went on. "With this candle, I will light your way into darkness. With this ring, I ask you to be mine." He then slipped the ring onto my finger.
"That was brilliant Victor!"
"Heh, thanks," he replied bashfully. He looked down as he added, "Y/n, I only did it because of you. You're the only one I feel comfortable with. I can be myself around you. I just hope you know that even though I'll be marrying Victoria, she will never compare to the way you've treat me." I notice his hand is still on mine and he blushes as I hold his tighter. He averts his gaze towards me again.
"Victor, I don't know how I'll live without you. I miss the days when we were always together, and I realize now that...maybe, I love you as more than just a friend." I stare at him longingly, hoping he feels the same. The silence was deafening. Before I knew it, tears began to trickle down my face. "Oh Victor, you must think I'm such a fool." I bury my face into my arms as my cries turn to sobs. Victor was speechless for what felt like an eternity.
"Y/n, look at me." I force my head back and attempt to hold in my whimpers. I struggle to look him in the eye, shame filling every inch of my body. Victor brings his hand to my cheek and wipes away my tears. As his hand rested on my face, his expression was full of empathy. "I love you too, and I always have." Victor then leaned in and his soft lips pressed against mine. I could taste the saltiness in my tears, but my fears washed away and were replaced by butterflies. Our mouths intertwined and the overwhelming sense of euphoria was unimaginable. Victor gently swayed over me and my back rested on the bed. He was on top of me and a burning feeling of excitement swept through my body.
