Why oh why did fate continually test my patience?!
I had come to the restroom to gather my thoughts and on the best way to handle everything that was going on. To regroup.
But it seems like even that was too much to ask. I didn't even try to keep the disdain from my eyes as I glared at her. I wanted her to know exactly what I thought of her. I wanted her to know the contempt and anger, I held in my heart for her. Which was quite funny, because I had kept her in such high regard before. She had appeared so good, so in love with Tom. They had made the perfect couple, it had even made me envious of their relationship.
"It couldn't get any better than this," I had thought back then. Well, I was right. It could only get worse. So much worse.
I kept my tube of lipstick back into my silver clutch at an unhurried pace. I wasn't going to let her think her presence had an effect on me whatsoever, even though I had rather not be in the same room as her, much less breathe the same air as her.
She took a step towards my direction and I stiffened. She stopped and sighed. "Scarlett," she said in a beseeching whisper. When I made no move to turn around, she sighed again. "I-I... I am so sorry. I never meant for any of this to happen. And I know it's all my fault and I..." she paused her sobbing and took a deep breath, continuing shakily, "I am so sorry, Scarlett."
"Are you quite done?" She visibly flinched at the blatant hostility in my voice. She clutched her crimson purse so hard, it left her knuckles bloodless.
"I... Tom—"
That was it! I lost all control on my emotions, I spoke cutting her off, "Oh please, cut the drama. You never cared for Tom, didn't you? It was always about yourself, I can see that now. You've always wanted the best things and since Tom can't provide it, you went for his boss. His boss! The boss of the man that you claimed to love! That's so low even for you, waving it all over his face that he couldn't provide for you so you climbed higher. And to think I never saw it coming." She shook her head. "I trusted you—Tom trusted you with his heart and what did you do with that trust, huh? You walked over it, leaving him to pick up the pieces!"
Her mouth parted open, a lone tear spilling from her brimming eyes to splash on her cheeks. A part of me felt bad for being the cause of her cry but another part, the vindictive side, nodded in satisfaction. I wanted her to feel exactly how Tom was feeling. She deserved all that and more for what she did to Tom.
"Scarlett, you have to understand. It isn't—"
"How it looks like? Is that what you wanted to say? But that's where you are wrong. It is exactly how it's like. You are a gold digger who just threw away the best thing that could ever happen to her." I grabbed my purse from the granite counter, suddenly feeling sick of this entire conversation. "I find that this place is starting to feel a little repressing for me—something in here stinks." I gave her a scathing smile to let her know exactly whom I thought it was. "So if you'll excuse me."
I glided out the door and entered into the lavish ballroom with slightly unsteady legs. I blinked back the water that had formed in my eyes due to the light glaring from the chandeliers—or so I told myself—and scanned the hall for Tom. His above average height would make it easy for me but I couldn't see him anywhere. Where could he have gone too?
I made my way through the sea of elegantly dressed men and women, hoping to spot his tall figure anywhere. I proceeded to call him but it went straight into voicemail, making me clench my teeth in frustration. He wasn't answering his calls and to make matters worse, he was drunk which meant he could be anywhere in this building!
To my right, I saw Marco DeSantis talking with several middle-aged businessmen. He stood out from them, his height and looks setting him apart like a god among mortals.
