Blaise and Jake and I were playing board games. It was mid-January and the winter air rushing down off the mountains left the outdoors unwelcoming, while doubling the coziness of hunkering down with a couple frozen pizzas and a couple of cute boys. So far Jake was winning, so I put that down in his column in my internal "Blaise or Jake" list. Abruptly, Blaise stood up.
"My heart is now healed enough that I can occasionally offer apologies." he declared, "I knew you were in danger, which is why I did all of those things that were red flags. I promise I will change those things now, but also, the sexy behavior I've displayed that was intimately entangled with those red flags, that will stay. Also, the unambiguously bad things I did was because I was partially possessed by a-"
"You don't need to say anything more," I told him, gently. "All is forgiven."
Our game night lasted well into the evening, and even though Blaise was normally a night owl, he offered to help Jake get ready for bed. I'd join them soon, but I needed to check the mail.
Two things. The first was a postcard reading "Greetings From the Grand Canyon". I flipped it over and began to read.
"Dearest Madison,
I'm sure my absence has been trying on you. Maybe this is selfish of me, but I wanted you to know first and foremost that I never wanted to be away from you, and that if I could have come home, I would have in a second! I'm so proud of you. I don't know how you did it, but the Imprisoned One's acolytes could no longer keep me-"
Wait. Could it be? Was this... I tossed the postcard aside to verify the glance I'd just gotten of my second piece of mail.

Oh no. That meant... I skimmed down until I saw it.
A blank space, big enough for but a single name, taunting me, the words under it a puzzle I'd have to solve:
