One Call Away

Why?

You had never though that falling in love would work like this. It all happened so quickly.

You found out so much about yourself in so little time.

If it was so great, then why did it hurt so much?

------------------

Yondu sat in the captain's chair and contemplated the last few weeks. What was happening? He couldn't go soft. Not now.

He had to deal with it. Before it got out of hand.

------------------

You were sure it was a dream. It had to be.

"You're distracting me, and I can't go soft."

"What do you mean? I'm afraid I....."

It had to be a dream because now he was kissing you.

He pulled away rather quickly, and said, "There. Now ya happy?"

"Does that mean you love me?"

"No. I can't go soft on some girl like you. Now, I have a ship to run. Stop distracting me."

Was it a dream? Nope. It wasn't because now he was walking away. And it hurt.

----------------

The next day you were demoted from working on the bridge and were sent to cleaning duty. And you knew exactly why.

You didn't really care about anything at this point. Because you gave up trying.

You were such a mess. Yondu walked by at some point during the day, with a woman on his arm. She told him how ugly you looked, and he laughed.

He laughed. You would never forget that laugh. It would echo in your head forever.

You were going to leave as soon as possible.

Apparently not today, because the attack alarm went off. And because you were a medic, you raced to get your gun/supplies.

After suiting up, you went down to your tent and waited. You'd shoot some bad guy every now and then, but it got really boring. You heard your radio go off, and sighed.

"Finally, something I'm good at comes in handy."

Your heart stopped when you saw it was Yondu.

They set him down and Kraglin explained his heart was hit, and he had lost a lot of blood.

You immediately hooked him up to a blood supply and an oxygen tank, and performed a very delicate surgery on his heart. And the entire time, that laugh echoed in your head.

After finishing, you stitched him back up and got some guys to haul him back to the ship. And, of course, there were problems getting him there.

You were busy fighting off so many enemies on the ground, you didn't notice one in a nearby tree. You only noticed when you felt pain shoot through your leg.

You killed the dude, and hid in a thorn bush. It hurt, but you killed most of them off, and they eventually surrendered. When they did, you dragged yourself onto the ship and they took off.

------------------

Everyone was talking about you for the next couple days. What you did was really brave, and they all admitted they couldn't have done what you did.

"Who are y'all talking about?" Yondu walked in, and the room went silent.

"(Y/n), we're talking about (Y/n), sir. She was the reason they retreated so quickly. She stitched you up, and then hid in a thorn bush and sniped them all off, cap'n." Kraglin stated.

"She did what now?"

"She sniped...."

"No, b'fore that."

"She stitched you up, sir?"

"She stitched ME up?"

"I mean, yeah cap'n. One of the smoothest surgeries I've ever seen."

Yondu thought about that for a moment, when someone said "Yeah, until her accident happened."

"What?" Yondu's heart started racing, and he didn't know why.

"Didn't ya know? Her leg was shot through pretty bad, 'nd sittin' in them thorns didn't help much. She's been cooped up trying to learn how to use her crutches."

"She seemed kinda sad."

"Where's your so called 'hero'?" Yondu tried to sound tough, but he felt really bad.

"She's in the commons, cap'n."

-----------------

You were extremely frustrated. Why couldn't you just learn how to use the stupid crutches?

"You can't do anything right, can you?" You muttered to yourself as you got back up from falling.

You tried again, and you fell. And it hurt.

You saw the boots and knew it was Yondu.

"Go ahead. Laugh. I know it's why you came." You stated solemnly, and you patiently waited. But the familiar laugh did not resound.

All you saw was his hand, outstretched.

You looked up at him, trying to figure out if he was messing with you or not.

He seemed to be serious. So you took it, and he helped you up.

You looked at him, and he didn't say anything.

You believed it was a dream because now he was kissing you. His arms were supporting you.

He pulled away slowly this time, and you knew it wasn't a dream when he looked at you.

"Now, what are we going to do about your crutches?" Yondu asked, looking down at them on the ground.

"I can't learn how to use them. I've tried."

"Well then, we'll just have to fix that, won't we?" He picked you up into his arms.

"Nah, you're kidding right?" You laughed, but when Yondu didn't let go, you laughed even more.

What was nice, is that the laugh you remembered was gone. It was replaced with a laugh that went perfectly with yours.
