I drove down to Annabeth's to pick her up on the way to school. The girls' parents had never married - her mom lived in Greece and her dad with his wife. Annabeth didn't want to stay with either so her parents had compromised; they rented an apartment in the same city as her dad and during the summer she would stay with her mom.
When I arrived downstairs I honked loudly. We were going to be late. A minute later she burst out of the building. Annabeth, who was usually demure in her clothes choices, opting for something simple and practical - a close cut shirt and pants or shorts, was wearing a huge black t-shirt with a drawing of Poseidon holding a scepter, a paragraph in Greek beside the god. The shirt was half tucked into a short leather skirt that had folds in it. Her hair was wild, barely brushed, mused on one side.
She turned back to the building and raised a middle finger. I ducked my head, trying to see what she was looking at. There was a guy lazily standing on her fourth floor balcony, his ebony hair as disheveled as hers. He was sticking her tongue out at him.
Interesting.
Annabeth sat down in the car beside me, throwing an over-sized sky blue hoodie into the backseat along with her bag. Her eyes were smudged with eyeliner.
"'Morning," I said innocently.
She narrowed her eyes, "why are you in such a good mood?"
"I could say the same thing 'bout you."
"What do you mean?"
"Who was the guy? An ex? Hookup? Friend?" I asked as we began driving. Annabeth had never mentioned a boyfriend.
She rolled her eyes, "No one."
"Oh come on! I'm not blind, you know that?"
"I didn't think you were." Great. Now she was annoyed.
We stayed silent for the rest of the drive but when she leaned back to get her bag, I saw a hickey on her neck. She quickly covered it with her hair.
We split when we got into school. I had Chemistry, she had math.
The rest of the day was rather uneventful. We had different lunch periods as well so the next time I saw her was on the way out.
"Ya need a ride?" I asked.
"Um..." she hesitated and I immediately knew.
"Let me guess. He's supposed to pick you up but he bailed?" She didn't respond as she scanned the parking lot hopefully. I reached out my hand, "Annabeth, babe-" but she immediately ran off.
I shielded my eyes, trying to see anything. Annabeth had run up to a guy on a motorcycle. He stopped, pulling off the helmet. It was the same guy from the morning, no doubt about the height and the hair color. He had an eyebrow piercing, too.
Annabeth reached up and kissed him fiercly. He grinned against her lips and I walked over to them.
"That shirt looks familiar." his voice was low and amused.
"I was in a rush, okay?" she said, playfully defending herself. That explained the clothes.
"So does the sweater. Is this what happens when I do laundry? You steal all my clothes? I'll stop cleaning them then." So he had been staying over for a while.
"Eww! gods, Percy. Just get a lock on your closet."
A smile tugged on his lips, "it's good to see you again, baby." she just snuggled closer into him.
