I woke up the next morning and saw Lacey and Harrison Jr. not in the room. "Lacey? Harrison? You here?" No answer. "Lacey. Harrison." Still no answer. I sat up and called for a nurse.
"Yes?" said a kind nurse.
"Do you know where my kids are?"
"They went to school ma'am. This morning while you were sleeping." I looked at the clock and saw that it was noon. That was when I got the phone call that every parent dreads.
* * *
"What? What do you mean they didn't make it to school? I said in a panicky voice. My heart pounded and sweated water-falled down my forehead.
"What I mean is, Mrs. Phelps, your kids didn't come to school today."
My heart dropped.
I screamed. I cried.
Three nurses rushed into the room to help me calm down. I screamed for Lacey. I screamed for Harrison Jr. I cursed Kirk for this. This was all his fault.
I demanded to be released from the hospital, but they refused. I forced my way out instead.
I shoved past nurses and made doctors release their death grips on my right wrist.I still had my blood-crusted hospital gown on over my clothes and no shoes. I felt everyone's gaze fall on me, and only me. My face flushed, but I kept fighting to get out using all my force. I had to find my kids.
They are all I have left. I needed to find Lacey and Harrison Jr., not matter what it took.
