it was the night before tobio kageyamas 16th birthday. he was waiting for midnight to come. waiting for a name to write itself on his arm. he contemplated facetiming a friend but decided against it.
it was midnight. kageyama looked down expectingly, there was nothing. no name u at all. he sat baffled on his bed looking up to his fan and down to his wrist over and over thinking it would appear. nothing ever did. that night he fell asleep wondering if the same thing happened to other people.
the next morning when kageyama woke up he looked down again expectingly. but to his dismay there was still a blank wrist. nothing but skin and the faint blue of his veins. he got ready to go to volleyball practice. maybe kageyama did something wrong. maybe he didn't have a soulmate he wondered so many possibilities he didn't realize he was at the gym already. he walked inside to see hinata waiting for him along with the rest of the team. hinata had a card with him and the biggest smile he had ever seen. "kageyamaaaaa" hinata shouted waving him over.
as kageyama walked over and went to grab the card he assumed was for him, hinata grabbed his wrist in attempt to see who his soulmate was. "what the hell" kageyama yelled at hinata while yanking his arm back. "i didn't see anything?" hinata said more like a question. "i didn't get a name dumbass". hinata looked up at the boy confused and a little sad. "oh" was all he said. kageyama wondered why he looked sad but brushed it off as if it was nothing.
practice dragged on, kageyama attempted to do the quick attack with hinata but the smaller boy didn't jump, he looked at kageyama doing nothing. "WHAT THE HELL IDIOT" they lost the 3x3 match.
"what the hell was that dumbass" kageyama questioned the boy. "i'm off my game today" hinata shouted back "hinata, you might need to go home if you aren't feeling well" the captain suggested. "fine whatever" the small boy said. "are you doing okay" questioned suga(mama) "just great" hinata faked a smile and stormed out the gym. "after practice can you swing by his house and check on him kageyama" "sure" kageyama deadpanned at the vicecaptain.
practice dragged on for what seemed like forever, but when it did finally end kageyama made his way to the smaller boys house with an emotionless face as usual. when he reached hinatas house he knocked on the door and was greeted by his sister. "hi kageyama" she exclaimed as she had seen him over before and had become acquainted with him. "is hinata here" "yes, come in" she moved so he had room to come in and he removed his shoes by the door. as he made his way to the boys room, knowing the way he couldn't help but look at the walls with pictures hanging up of a smiling younger hinata.
"can i come in idiot" kageyama spoke as he knocked on hinatas door. hinata opened the door, he looked surprised "kageyama? what are you doing here" the taller of the two responded, "i came to check up on you, suga told me too" hinata moved out of the door frame "oh well then come in, i'm fine just tired" hinata lied through his teeth saying that, he looked down at his wrist. kageyama tobio. how was kageyama his soulmate but he wasn't kageyamas? it made no sense to him. "why don't you have a soulmate" hinata asked before thinking. "what makes you think i know" "i was just wondering, i heard it's pretty rare to not have one" hinata explained. "i know that dumbass, i guess i'm one of the rare ones, but since your older whos yours". hinata looked shocked at the interest kageyama was showing. he nervously laughed "heh yeah, uh i don't think i want to tell you" he looked down while saying it. "why not, is it embarrassing" kageyama was starting to get concerned. "no it's not like that, i just think you'd get mad" "why the hell would i get mad, its not like i get to choose it for you" kageyama said, the concern now showing in his voice. "i'm not ready to tell anyone yet, is that okay" hinata looked at kageyama while saying this. "i mean i guess i understand, just tell me when youre ready" the taller one said, hinata thought he might've sounded angry but shook it off.
hinata and kageyama went out to the olders backyard to practice since hinata had to leave early, they didn't realize how late it was. "since it's already late do you wanna stay the night" hinata spoke up just now noticing the time. "if it's okay i guess i can" hinata laughed at his response. "i wouldn't have suggested it if it wasn't ok" "tch, whatever" hinata laughed louder at kageyama.
