It was around eight o'clock when Dad started cooking dinner; I was playing with Riley and Cole in the living room. Mom was working on her novel; my mother is a novelist for the local bookstore. She doesn't write all the time because she doesn't want to stress herself out. My dad is an office worker for a small business. I don't know exactly what he does, but I don't bother asking.
"Pay pay?" Riley tugged on my shoulder.
"Yeah? What's up?"
"She's been trying to get your attention for ten minutes," Cole responded.
"Oh, you were? I'm sorry sis."
"It's okay, Pay pay. Look what I did!" She showed me a picture she had been drawing; it was her hugging me and at the bottom, the picture said I love you! I smiled and played with her light brown curly hair.
"I love you too." Riley's blue eyes sparkled as she smiled.
Dad called for dinner; picked up Riley and carried her to the table. Cole followed behind me. We all sat down; Dad brought the chicken and tea to the table. Everyone talked about this and that. Mom cracked a couple of jokes; they were all bad. I messed with Riley a little by pretending to take her food. After dinner, I went up to my room and changed. I laid in my room just staring at the ceiling. I listened to the cars passing by my house for hours trying to fall asleep.
I decided to go for a drive to clear my head: I grabbed my wallet, phone, and jacket before I headed out the door. I drove to the pharmacy to pick up sleep pills; I have slight insomnia, but I don't know why. Since I was ten, I haven't gotten much sleep most nights, and yet it never affected my grades. I was used to not sleeping, but it was a pain sometimes because I needed the rest. I grabbed my medication and went home. Well, I tried too but I got distracted. The sound of owls hooting was pleasant and relaxing. I stayed there for twenty minutes, listening. When I got home it was ten and I was really tired so I crashed into my bed after taking my pills.
