Finally. The day was here. The day I'd never have to worry about high school again in my life. Well...of course I'd go back to school for college, but it was Summer. I was walking home from school through the forest that always led me to my joyful home...well somewhat joyful.
I lived with my dad and his wife, Claire. Claire had married my dad about a year ago, but I wasn't a big fan of her. Trust me there was nothing wrong with her just I guess I couldn't get over the fact my dad got over my mom so easily...there's nothing I can do now though.
I looked around the forest as I kept walking through, hearing the twigs snap beneath my feet. The green leaves were blowing in the wind, which was giving just enough of a breeze to keep it from being too hot. I hopped over the fallen trees that had rotted with age seeing the entry to my back yard. I smiled and grabbed the strap to my backpack running to the gate as fast as I could. My hands fumbled with the handle that was the only thing separating me from my house. The gate finally opened allowing me in and I locked it behind me.
Walking over to the picnice table, I sat down with my bag beside me as I took out my sketch book. Drawing the scenery in my backyard was nothing new to me and surprisingly I haven't ran out of things to draw. This time I decided to draw the pathway through the forest. I had started with the gate as I began to draw, letting my long hair fall in front of my face trying to make my lines perfect.
As I was drawing, I heard the familiar meowing that always caused me to smile. "Hey, buddy," I smiled petting the beautiful brindle colored cat. The small cat purred rubbing against my hand as I laughed a little. "I know what your looking for, cmon." I picked him up putting him into my backpack...a daily routine. I had emptied my locker a couple days ago so all my backpack had was my sketch book, but I had taken that out. He meowed a little and I giggled and shushed him, closing the backpack leaving a gap for air. I picked up the backpack, going inside of my house.
There sat Claire as always when I got home. She smiled at me with her hazel brown eyes as I walked in. "Hey, Melody," she replied to me while I shut the back door.
"Um, hey," I kept the backpack close as I began to walk past her.
"Where are you going?" Claire asked getting up from the table where she was reading a magazine.
I sighed, "I wanna go up to my room. It's my vacation and I wanna just relax for a little."
She looked at me suspiciously but I kept a calm face. "Okay fine. But be down for dinner later," she went over to the fridge grabbing a bottle of water.
I nodded, "I will be." I walked over to the stairs before heading my name called again. "Yes?"
Claire appeared in the living room. "I just wanted to tell you that you got invited to a party tomorrow night if you wanna go."
I thought about it. "I'm not sure if dad will..."
She cut me off, "I'll talk to him about it. I bet he'll let you. You're responsible enough."
I smiled, "okay then yeah I'll go."
"Okay!" She laughed a little and went back to the kitchen.
I went upstairs to my bedroom and shut the door behind me. First thing I did was put my backpack on my bed and opening it. Then shutting the door as I saw the cat walk out from the bag. I liked to call him buddy since I didn't know his name, but he seemed to respond to it.
"Come here, Buddy," I said as I grabbed a can of cat food out of my nightstand which I kept especially for Buddy. He walked over to me gracefully and I opened it, sitting on the ground and putting it in front of me. Buddy came over and started to eat it. I pet his head as he ate. "I wish I could keep you. But Claire doesn't like cats," I sighed and sat up. I've always wanted a cat my whole life but I've never had one. I considered Buddy mine, since he was a stray of course and he always came back to me probably for food. But whatever. I loved this cat no matter what. He was my best friend. I could always tell him anything.
I got up and went over to my mirror to look at my appearance. My brown hair was a little messy so I tried to brush through it with my fingers. My outfit today was simple. A T-shirt and shorts with my converse. Just a simple outfit for a simple girl. I groaned a little to myself. My life was so plain and I didn't like it. There was never excitement in my life... Maybe if I do end up going to that party tomorrow it will change. We can only hope...
