There are specific days in your life where you either remember all what has happened in details, or forget almost everything.
The first is what happened in one important day of my life. The day that I had quite an unfortunate event, a car accident. Every single detail got engraved in my mind. Chronologically it went like this:
Saturday morning, 23 September 2019 :
Esma shouting from the other room "Amos, hurry up! We are so damn late!"
"I know, I know, I'm coming."
"It's your fault, I'm not gonna make it! I should have taken the bus! It's almost 8 and I have to by there within half an hour..."
"Don't worry, we'll make it in time"
"NO WE WILL NOT! It's one thing I ask from you and you can't do it right! Couldn't you wake up earlier?!"
"Esma SHUT UP! You'll make it in time for the scholarship interview. I'll make sure of it! Don't be a spoiled child and just give me a few more minutes."
"Yeah I'll make it IN time, not ON time as it should be!! You'll hit the gas pedal on full speed again, won't you? And if you get caught you'll get a fine. And the most important that's pretty dangerous."
"Yo sis, get in the car. I'm ready!"
"Finally! Uh... Hey, big bro... what's up with you? When did you last have... a decent sleep? Or any sleep at all? Cause you look devastated."
"Uh like 2 hours ago, maybe 3...But don't worry. I'm fine, It's OK, let's go."
"No it's not OK..., you are exhausting yourself Amos...How I wish I could help..."
"You focus on your studies Esma. That's the greatest thing you can do to help yourself and your family."
"Sorry, for shouting earlier. I was really nervous and impatient and kind of scared.."
"Don't worry! You'll do alright. You're gonna be awesome. And if you feel any nervous when interviewed remember what I have taught you."
"Uh, What?"
"Imagine kicking their ass! It'll turn the tables. And if they still get on your nerves don't hesitate to kick them in real life! Also wish for some good luck!"
"Yeah yeah..."she chuckled "Best advice one could give! Let's go now!"
I remember dropping Esma off exactly as I promised her, IN TIME. Then my phone started ringing. It was a call from Boyd. The only guy I kind of trusted here. He is around the same age as me, man with great virtues, Oh and with a vivid dictionary!"
"Hey Boyd! What's up?"
"Amos, Where are You? You're late for work man! If you don't get here right now, boss is gonna fire your a*s"
"I thought we were off today! What happened?"
"Well, the cargo got here a day earlier and we were texted to work today. Haven't you checked your Messages?"
"No, bro."
"Hurry up, p*ssy, this cargo won't unload on it's own!"
"Ok, I'll be right there"
I texted Esma that I had to leave and wouldn't be there to pick her up. So I hurried from one place to the other. Barely making it in time! I perfectly remember working hard as hell, unloading cargo from one truck and loading it on the other... After 4 or maybe 5 hours that felt like a lifetime it was all over.
"Good Job Boys!" said the boss "You'll get very well rewarded for doing the job this fast, even though it was supposed to be your day off. Now go home and enjoy your earned rest. We'll be in touch.
"I hate the guts of this as*hole of a boss" said Boyd." Very well rewarded, like what 20 dollars more... It's terrible"
I chuckled completely agreeing with him.
"Did you wonder why was this job so important to be done right away? What was in those boxes anyway? They felt way heavier than the usual ones!"
"I don't know man. And I don't really care honestly! All I need right now is some really good sleep."
"Yea Amos, you sure do! Have you noticed your eyes. Bloody red eyes with dark black bags underneath! Any emo guy would be jealous of your appearance right now!"
"Fuck Off!"
He laughed and we left. Different directions.
When I went home, I found Esma in the kitchen, with another guy her age and a little puppy.
"Esma. "I yelled. She awkwardly came to me and pulled me to the other room.
"What is that puppy and that dog doing here? How'd the interview go? "
Nervously she started "I surely kicked some ass, but they told me they'd contact me if I was selected! Which I'm pretty sure I was not. Sorry! And as I left I met my school friend Joshua. He noticed I was kind of sad and gave me a ride home. And I saw the cute little puppy in the corner of the street. It was cold and I decided to take it home. Can I please, please, please keep it? Look at its fur, it's golden."
"Esma, where do I start. Well, it's ok if they don't choose you for the scholarship. We'll find a way! And that boy, better be just a school friend and nothing more... And as heartbreaking it may be, no we can't keep the puppy... Please leave it where you found it."
"But Amos, " she started. I didn't make out what she told me. I was already half asleep. When I laid my head in the bed, I was sleeping like half dead.
I had a memory. A vague memory of a distant time. A time that felt surreal. A time when we had a nice house, Didn't have to worry about money. Dad was home and mom was smiling. Esma was a little baby, starting to have her first little steps. I was running in the loan with our cute dog. Tuna , our golden retriever was catching the tennis ball... but then I saw the dog dead. Then it started raining and I was not in our old house. I was alone in the middle of a crossroad. Cars passing by with their blinding lines, and deafening horns...
And a deafening sound. I woke up and noticed the sound was my phone ringing. The clock was past 6. I answered.
"Hello Amos" it was my boss. "Can you transport the truck you loaded the cargo today to a destination I'll ask you? In condition you do it after 9 PM and arrive before 1AM."
"Sorry boss, I'm really busy today. I can't."
"Not even for 2K dollars?!"
"What?"
"Ok, 3K dollars..."
"Uh, I'll see what I can do..."
