I was disturbed in more than one ways and all of them had to do something with the same person. Before he could say something else, I discreetly did the stupidest yet bravest thing I had ever done and tried to bolt out of there but just as I was about to make it, I got interrupted by none other than Logan the eavesdropper, surer than anything that he was listening in, but before I could give him a piece of my mind, he gripped my arm tight enough to hurt and started dragging me somewhere.

“Don’t go back home tonight.”

I had no idea what he was up to so I tried to thrash about but his quiet words made me go limp. “Keep following me if you don’t want to die.”

After a minute of incredulousness, I burst out laughing, digging my heels in the ground at the same time, “Or what, you’re going to kill me?”

“No. The chief is.” That got my attention and I started to comply with him.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, more serious than I was moments ago.

“You do know that what you did today put Chief in jeopardy and that he is not a just man, right?” he spoke once we has walked a few blocks away from the situation.

“Everyone knows that. Go on.”

“Chief has dispatched the shadows to… put you out whenever you reach back home.”

“Like I’m a fucking candle?” I bit out, gape mouthed.

“Just, uh, lay low for a while and take care. I would’ve offered my place but if I get caught…” he trailed off with a meaningful look.

“No, no I’d never put you through that. Thank you for informing me though.”

“Don’t hate Logan the eavesdropper that much anymore, huh?” he joked in parting.

“Not anymore.” I whispered out to his parting shadow, still stunned by the situation I found myself in.

I stood there, unable to take anything in for minutes, hours, days or maybe years before I received a call. Startled by the sudden sound, I grasped for it and pressed “accept” out of sheer muscle memory, without checking the caller ID.

“Hello” came the soothing voice of Spice followed by rustling of the trees in the background.

“Where are you?” I immediately panicked.

“Oh, I just couldn’t find you anywhere so I went around, looking for you. You haven’t eaten anything yet. I was worried.”

“Where are you now Spice?” I yelled out in frustration.

“Calm down. I’m just down the hall. I’ll be inside now.” She spoke in that damn soothing tone again, making me even more anxious, followed by the sound of the door unlocking.

“Whatever you do, don’t go in Spice-” before I could finish my sentence, Spice detected the frustration in my voice and mistook it for something else.

“No Bekah. Please don’t do this. I was just worried. I’ll remember my place from now on.” The door opened.

“Shut up and listen to me, god dammit.” I yelled again but before I could make her listen to me, there was a tiny creak of the door opening followed by the deafening bang that left my ear with an annoying beep and my heart shattered into a million, heavy pieces.

“Oh Spice.”
