When I woke up, I wasn't in my own bed: I was in a large, dark bed with four posts and curtains that swayed even though there was no wind. I climbed out of the bed. Having no way of telling whether it was day or night, I looked for light sources, but they shifted with the shadows as I moved. I wasn't sure that being able to see in the dark would help me, considering I had no idea where I was. I had a rough guess though: judging by the sinister and eerie feeling of the place, I'd been kidnapped by my father.
I remember Jack saying that he'd been here before: crooked stone bridges and confusing corridors. There was a globe somewhere too, but it didn't show who believed in Pitch, it showed who believed in the Guardians. He was obsessed!
I started walking around, wondering how my father had built such a place and why he was so intent on making this place as daunting as possible. Where had he gone? Was he even here now? All I could do was hope that if I didn't make it out of here by myself, then Jack would come and help me. I tried sending a golden line to Jack, and then to the other Guardians, but as quickly as the line appeared, it winked out of existence, flickering like a broken light bulb. Clearly my magic had been blocked off here. I tried to block Pitch's magic but it wouldn't work: this was his lair, this was where his magic resided. Of course it wouldn't work if I tried using my own.
Suddenly, I heard the whinnying of a horse. It sounded frightened. I tried going towards the source of the sound and I saw a sandy-looking black horse with yellow eyes and several hundred Gothic cages hanging behind it. Enough to hold all ten thousand of Toothiana's fairies, from what I'd been told by Jack. When I went close to the horse, it whinnied and backed away from me. "Hey, it's okay," I said softly, trying to calm her down. This must have been one of Pitch's Nightmares. She could probably sense the power I had though, which is why she was so scared of me. She reared up and I flew above her and put my hand carefully on her face. I remembered Jack saying that whenever Sandy touched a Nightmare, it would turn into a gold-coloured dream. Perhaps I could do something similar.
Fortunately, it worked: standing before me was a (much less sandy) black-furred mare with great wings, like mine, but the backs of the wings were permanently dusted with gold (which only happened for me when I was using my powers). She still had yellow eyes, but I could see her black pupils now, rather than her entire eye being yellow. "Hello, my beautiful Bravemare." She whinnied happily in reply, flapping her wings. "You know your way around here, don't you?" I asked. She seemed to nod her great head. "Okay then," I said, starting to fly, "let's get out of here then, shall we?" I asked. She flew up to join me, and we were going to leave before I heard Pitch..."Not so fast," he began. I looked down at him, before laughing, and making to fly off again. He sent three Nightmares after me, and upon touching them they transformed, just like the first. One turned to a horse-sized black dragon with yellow eyes and golden details; the next turned to a huge winged wolf with flecks of gold in its fur and wings; the last turned to a black Haast's eagle - which was an animal that was supposed to be extinct. Then again, you didn't really see dragons roaming the skies, either.
Pitch seemed to have had enough. He looked angry, and ready to attack, but the rest of his Nightmares started turning on him, just as they had before, according to Jack. Oh Jack, I thought, what if it's still nighttime and he doesn't even know I'm gone yet? Either way, my new companions and I needed to leave. I followed them out of the lair and into a forest. His lair's underground? I thought, before taking to the blue sky with my creatures. We were going home again. I'd have to think of names for them when I had a chance."I wonder if he'll ever stop coming after us," I said to them.
