The only things we had brought with us were old tools from my parent's shed full of their farming supplies. Alice told me what tools to bring. She knows so much about that sort of stuff. We also brought food, but only 4 pieces of steak, and a 16 pieces of bread, which meant we each got 2 pieces of steak, and 8 pieces of bread. That's actually not very much.
We continued on our journey, trying to find some place that suited us. We were currently in a forest that had a mix of oak wood, and birch wood trees. I had always known there was a forest surrounding the village, but my mom always told me to stay out of it, because it's easy to get lost in a forest. I wasn't quite sure where we wanted to settle, but I knew we would know once we saw it. But just in case, I asked anyways.
"Hey Alice? Where are we planning to stay?" I asked eager to get an answer.
She stared into the distance while she talked, "Somewhere where it's possible to live. Somewhere with plenty of trees and food to live off of." She said
"What about a place where we have lots of iron?" I asked
"We can find iron in caves, and caves are all around so we won't have to worry about not finding a place with iron." She explained.
"Is there usually a lot of iron in caves?" I asked another question. I had never really gone mining before, and I was excited to learn from Alice.
"Well, there is a pretty good amount of iron in caves usually. I'm sure we will be fine. Maybe we could even find enough iron to build an iron house!" She said excitedly, even though she knew that probably wouldn't happen.
"Ya," I agreed "And we will make an iron path to compliment our iron house!"
Alice giggled, "And maybe we will even build a big bridge over a big lake that will be really close to our house!" I could tell Alice was imagining what our house would look like and where it was.
"We could even build a city out of iron! The richest city this world's ever seen!" I exclaimed excitedly.
"Ya! And there would be a big river that looped around our entire city, with big iron bridges that arched over the water!" Alice's eyes went wide as she talked about her ideas.
"And we could build this big colorful sign that would float above our city, and it would say our names and all the citizens would honor us, and thank us for giving them the best place to live!" I imagined the biggest brightest sign anyone had ever seen, and the citizens of our town, shouting our names as we walked by. Boy did I want that fantasy to come true!Alice started to say something else, but she stopped and was then worriedly staring into the distance.
"What's wrong?" I asked her, trying to see what she was staring at. I didn't see anything but trees the sky and the sun, and then I realized she was looking at the sun. It was going down, leaving the sky a faded orange color. "Oh no" I said quietly.
"Come on, we need to find shelter" Alice mandated me as she pulled my hand.We ran further into the forest, searching for somewhere that would keep us safe from the night. Finaly, Alice pointed somewhere in the direction of the setting sun and said, "Look! A small cave, we can stay there!" She gripped my hand a bit harder, as she pulled me toward the small cave. It was more like a small arch carved in a big hill. It didn't really lead to anywhere, it was kind of just a small umbrella type land mark that was connected to the hill.
Alice asked for the wooden pick axe we took from my parent's shed. I wasn't sure what she was going to do with it. I handed the tool to her and she grabbed it. She looked at the stone that if you mined into it, it would lead you into the hill. She started hitting the pic axe at the stone, trying to break it, but she seemed to be failing.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"I'm trying to get us some blocks so that we can block ourselves off from the outside." She explained. "Umm... Is there any chance you know how to do this?" she asked me, which surprised me greatly, especially because I thought she knew how to do anything.
"You don't know?!" I asked her, shocked at what I had just heard her say.
"I know that we need to do this, I've just never done it before." She said looking down at her feet.
"Well if you have never done it before, how do you know what to do?" I asked.
"I read a lot, books can give you all sorts of information you need to know." She explained with delight.Alice tried to break the block again, but it wasn't working. She would hit it and pause, then hit it and pause, and repeat that pattern over and over again, but the stone showed no weakness. I could hear noises nearby, and I knew we were in big trouble.
"Hurry!" I urged her.
"I'm trying the block won't break!" She shouted back at me. The noises were getting closer, and we had to move quickly. I grabbed the pic axe and swung at the stone, not even pausing for a second. The block was getting weaker, and eventually it broke and a smaller block popped out of it. It had a different texture than the block we had originally broke, but I guess that didn't matter.Alice grabbed the block and placed it down next to me. I continued to break blocks, and Alice went to pick them up and place them. Eventually we had walls that blocked us off from the outside, the walls were only about two blocks high, and there was a big gap on each side of us, but that didn't matter. All that mattered was that nothing could get in over the two block high wall.
Our pic axe was almost out, so I put it away and sat down on the ground.
"What are we blocking ourselves off from?" I asked Alice.
"Mobs," she responded.
"Mobs?" I replied.
"Ya, mobs. Like monsters." Alice told me. I remember my parent talking about something like that, though I never heard the whole conversations. Apparently they were creatures that most people didn't like, though I had never seen one before. I heard the strange noise coming from outside again. It was a lot closer now then it was before. I don't think Alice heard it, but it was kind of like a moaning sound.
"What kind of monsters?" I asked another question.
"Monsters like zombies." Alice stated, "They are kind of like people, but their not nice, and they are really green. Oh, and they will try to kill us so they can eat our brains." Alice explained. When the thought of my brains being eaten by monsters came into my mind, my stomach started to feel weird. Then, I looked over at the gap over our wall, and there I saw it. The thing making the noise! I screamed as I pointed at the green creature. When Alice saw it, she screamed too. It made that horrible noise again, and it sounded a lot scarier than it did before.
Both Alice and I scooted back against the other wall, as far away from the creature as possible.
"Is that thing the zombie you were talking about!?" I asked Alice.
"Ya!" She said in a shaky voice.
"Is it going to kill us?" I asked another question.
"Ya!" Alice said again, her voice as shaky as it was when she said it before.
"Are we going to kill it?!"
"Ya!" Alice repeated once more, her voice still shaking.
"Well what are we waiting for?!"
"I...I don't know, what are we waiting for?!" Alice asked me.
"Nothing." I quietly said to her.She looked at me, but I just stared into the monster's eyes. Not taking my eyes off the green beast, I pulled the wooden sword out of my backpack, or "inventory" as most people called it. Then I ran up to the zombie, and swung my sword. He plunged backwards, but he wasn't defeated. Alice watched in awe, as I battled the beast in front of me. She couldn't believe it, and neither could I! I never knew that I could take on a mob like this zombie! I swung at it over and over again, and the monster still hadn't touched me. I went to take another swing, but then the creature walked up and before I could hurt him, he raised his arm, and scratched my arm. I dropped my sword in pain, as I stumbled over to the ground.
Alice gasped as she saw me go down. She ran up to my defense and held me in her arms. Her worried face turned into a glare. She grabbed my sword and faced the zombie. As she stood up, I saw her grip the sword tighter. She ran up to the creature and swung at him so hard that he was forced backwards. He had fallen to the ground and then disappeared, leaving white puffs of dust fly into the air, and a piece of flesh. Rotten flesh. There was something else though. Lying next to the rotten flesh, there was a raw potato.Alice didn't go to pick up the potato though. When the monster died, she immediately dropped the sword and turned around and ran to me.
"Oh my God! Alice! Are you okay?! Do you need help?! How badly does it hurt?! Do you think you'll survive? Are you going to be okay?" She flooded me with questions.
"I'm fine, I think. It hurts a lot though." I replied to her.
"Are you going to be okay?" She asked once again.
"Let's hope so, we really don't need any more trouble." I said. I didn't realize that leaving home would be so dangerous. I was starting to worry what we were actually facing in order to find a home.
