The Doctor and Layla followed this light. They had been walking a ways into the forest. They had passed Layla's camper when they stopped. A large clearing was ahead of them. About 15 werewolves were sitting in a circle around a fire. But this fire was blue, and it cast a ray on light into each wolf.
It was like nothing Layla had seen before. "What is that?" She whispered, not daring take her eyes off them. She suddenly panicked, searching each werewolf, seeing if Shaw was one of them. She let out a breath when she saw he wasn't.
"It looks like they're getting power from the the light thats transferring through the fire." He said back. "To much power. They'll destroy the whole town, then move on to the next."
"How do we stop it?" Layla asked.
"We douse that fire." The Doctor said sternly, pointing a finger at the fire.
"Water..." Layla said with worry, "where do we get water out here?"
"No no no," the Doctor shook his head. "We'll snuff it out. And the best way to do that is with dirt. The dark damp stuff. Works like a charm."
Layla immediately hunched down, and began clawing at the ground with her fingers. The Doctor did the same, and soon they both had handfuls of dirt. He yanked a handkerchief out of his pocket, placing all the dirt they had in the center. He took up the four corners, making it into a little carrier.
"You distract them. Then I'll run up and throw this on the fire, making sure it's stamped out."
"Got it." Layla said, her body quivering. Bravely, she stepped out into the clearing, and started talking loudly.
"Phew, that's a big moon! It's a wonder those tides don't wash us all away, gee, you'd think its daytime out!" He laughed forcefully. "Ah shoot, hi guys," she said, waving a hand lazily at the werewolves, though her head was screaming in terror at her. But her distraction worked. All the werewolves eyes were instantly trained on her, teeth bared. Murderous rage swirled in their eyes. She kept smiling even though a few began creeping towards her. She saw the Doctor sneak up behind them, then stamping all the dirt he had on the fire. The fire went out, and the light rays immediately dissapeared. All the werewolves gazes snapped around, as they lunged at the doctor.
But something unexpected happened. The werewolves suddenly fell, some in midair, howling and whimpering. Then light rays from the sky began piercing down randomly, like lightning. Layla lept back as a light ray hit the ground in front of her, splattering dirt in all directions.
"Get cover!" The Doctor yelled, grabbing her arm as he ran past, covering their heads. Explosions and cracking of wood sounded all around them as the light rays hit. They ran a ways, towards the town. Suddenly, a sound made its way to Layla's ears. A very distinct sound that she instantly knew what it was. Shaw. And he was in trouble; she could hear it. She stopped abruptly, and the Doctor looked at her curiously, seeing the worry on her face. She gave him a sollem and sorry look, then flew up into the air, towards Shaw.
Layla had just enough time to see the shocked look on the Doctor's face as she flew away. She didn't concentrate on him, but Shaw. She flew fast, coming to her camper, then realised he must be inside. But she saw the camper was now destroyed. A light beam must have hit it, because it had a hole in the top, was completely caved in one end, and was on fire. She heard Shaw howl inside.
Layla flew straight towards the camper, straight through the side window, shattering it. Instantly feeling the burning heat, she held up a hand to block her face. But she pulled it away, looking around for Shaw. Coughing, she saw him trapped under a chunk of metal. She met his gaze, startled by the wild look in his eyes, as he thrashed his paws and head. But the look faded away when he looked at her. He whimpered, closing his eyes as the wild look returned. Layla realised he must be fighting it.
