OO1. CHAPTER ONE ━━ THE IDEA OF SOULMATES
THE FIRST AND MOST important rule of girl code is: exes are off limits. Delilah Lee is proud to say that she has, and always will, abide by that rule.
Until she receives the name of her soulmate.
It's common knowledge that when a person turns eighteen, a name will appear on their skin. The first name of their soulmate, their destined partner, platonic or not.
It could be a friend, relative, or co-worker. A crush, if you're lucky. Maybe even a complete stranger. The only definitive and absolute thing about soulmates is that you cannot choose who you want them to be.
Delilah Lee does not want her soulmate to be her friend's ex, that much she's sure about.
"Um, maybe it could be a different Armin?" said Evelyn. The uneasiness in her voice is obvious which makes Delilah want to bury herself in a hole. She feels bad for Evelyn, she really does. She even tried to wash off the ink on her wrist in an attempt to hide the name, as if that would ever work or make her situation any different.
"How many Armin's live around here? Or that you even know of?"
"Well, soulmates don't always have to live nearby you. . ." The way Evelyn's voice trailed off let Delilah know that she wasn't too excited about who her friend's soulmate was. It was clear that Evelyn was trying to cling on to false hope. Hoping Delilah's soulmate wasn't her ex. Delilah couldn't blame her. How else could she react? By throwing a party?
For the past two weeks since she turned eighteen, Delilah was scared of what Evelyn would say.
Delilah was also scared of herself.
Both her aunt and mom married their soulmates. She remembers her aunt telling her about how her and her husband met, and it was a funny story she could listen to for hours. Those relationships only fueled Delilah's want to meet her own soulmate and marry them.
But the universe was not so kind to her.
She didn't want to ruin the relationships she had with Evelyn and her boyfriend. Delilah hated how she was so sure Kai would be her soulmate, only to have her hopes let down the morning she turned eighteen and looked at the name on her right hand. She was so enamored by this idea of falling in love with her soulmate, of somebody being meant for her. How could she act on that dream when she was already in love with another?
Which reminds her. She still hasn't told Kai.
Her boyfriend was currently away on vacation, spending his last few weeks of summer in the Bahamas before being weighed down by the responsibilities of a college student. It would also be more mentally draining for him considering his parents wanted him to get into medicine, and he would always do what his parents told him to.
Delilah felt happy for Kai which was why she was okay with him being away on her birthday. Definitely not the fact that she was having doubts about him being her soulmate and their relationship in general.
But back to Evelyn.
Evelyn had yet to turn eighteen, and her birthday was in a month. She was excited to finally hear who her friend's soulmate was, but the fact that it was Armin — her highschool sweetheart — was not the best thing to hear.
"Do you still talk to Armin?" Delilah spoke up. Evelyn's head perked up at the question, but her face quickly contorted into a grimace. "No, why would I?"
"I just need confirmation that he is or isn't my soulmate. I've never really talked to him before, so I figured I could talk to him through you," Delilah explained. Evelyn slowly nodded.
"Nah, I don't talk to him. Don't even know his social media stuff. I heard he's going to the same school as us, though. Just wait until September 1st, Lilah," Evelyn said.
Delilah Lee does not want her soulmate to be Armin Arlert, but what can she do about it?
