Chapter 3: Kaia Melodies

Ariel was paralyzed to her spot, barely moving, barely breathing.

"Ariel? What's going on? Why are you not inside."

She had no idea what to do. What would she say? How should she go about this conversation that is bound to happen? She obviously can't tell the truth, but how the hell will she be able to explain why she's standing in the rain?

When she looked up Zaierra was standing there too.

"I-I lost my keys and Makena isn't home."

"How did you lose your keys? Don't you remember that Jada gave them to you?" Zaierra says as she looks at Ariel. She raises her eyebrows and stares straight into Ariel's eyes, seeming skeptical. "And why wouldn't Makena be home? She should have gotten off of work a long time ago?"

Shit.

It was only then that Ariel started to notice that the sun was going down. She had no idea just how long was she actually out here. She felt as if there was a hammer banging on her skull, her nose was runny and her teeth were chattering.

It appears that she was coming down with a cold.

"Let's go inside my car and talk about this" Jada helps Ariel to her feet and puts the umbrella over her. She attempts to start walking towards her car but Ariel won't budge.

"I can't m-move"
"What? Why? Are you hurt?"
"No I just can't" Ariel turns around and looks at the wall of the building like some type of child that's been put on time out, trying her best to ignore the fact that her legs are shaking and she can barely hold herself up.

"You aren't making any sense Ariel, stop being stubborn and let's go" With that Jada pulls Ariel as hard as she can. She didn't imagine that it would cause Ariel to fall right on her ass.

And right when Ariel fell, so did her keys. They flew right out her pocket and next to Zaierra's foot.

"Ariel...your keys are right here" No one even moved to help her get back up. No umbrella over their heads anymore, just everyone staring at the keys.

Ariel opened and closed her mouth a couple times, looking like a fish out of water. No matter how many times she attempted to speak nothing would come out.

She finally looks up and sees Zaierra and Jada staring down at her, making her feel worse than she did in the first place.

And now she's angry at herself. She's angry because she has left so many clues that something is wrong with her and Makena's relationship over the span of a day when she's hidden it well for two years.

Two whole years of hiding that can be ruined from one day.

She pulls herself to her feet using Jada's arm and just mumbles a quick "oh there they are" and turns to go into the building knowing that her friends are following close behind her.

There's nothing she can do at this point but take them upstairs, go in her apartment, and make up a lie as to why Makena is inside while she was getting soaked.

When she opens the door the first thing everyone sees is Makena sitting on the couch watching television looking comfortable. She hears the door open and says.

"Who told you to come insi—" she finally looks up to see Jada and Zaierra. Her whole demeanor changes. "Ariel? What happened? Why are you wet?" She practically dashed out of her seat to get a towel for Ariel and coddle her. She helps her take her shoes off and wraps the towel around her and starts walking Ariel to their bathroom so she can shower.

Makena comes back and asks the girls what happened. They tell her the whole story and she thanks them for helping Ariel out.

"Makena if you were here how come Ariel was sitting outside getting drenched by rainwater? And how did you manage to get inside without seeing her?"
