Andromeda Finch always lost count. There had been so many sleepless night where she would find herself in this exact spot, listening to the waves crash against the sand, feel the cold underneath her toes, and look up at the night sky and start counting. How many stars were there? A million? A billion? A number that didn't even exist yet? The girl didn't know, but whenever her thoughts plagued her enough that her beauty sleep would not come, she would try to count the stars. At least the ones in the night sky that were  visible. But whenever she got to around 300 they'd all start to become a sparkling jumbled mess, just like the thoughts in her head, and she would lose count again and again.

Her hand dug into the wet sand underneath her, trying to make sense of what she was feeling. Honestly, she had never felt this way before, and it was a foreign sensation that gnawed at her, demanding to be felt. It was only 5 attempts at counting, and 1500 stars later, when the girl realized what it was— fear. And once she had a name to match with what coursed through her veins, it was quickly replaced with the feeling of guilt. How many demigods did she watch volunteer for quests whenever they arose? How many kids her age had gone into battle and never came out? All of them fighting to keep camp safe, her camp safe, while she got to spend her life shooting arrows at fake targets and painting her nails whenever they got a chip in them. It was these thoughts that kept her rooted here in the sand instead of running to Chiron and requesting to back out of the quest. Kept her from being a coward that she knew she had been for too long.

No, she would go on this quest. She would meet with Chiron in the morning and leave with Thalia, Grover, and the Hunters, no matter how much her traitor mind screamed at her that it wasn't worth it, not when Percy wasn't even going. But it was worth it. And after she completed her first quest and came back to camp a hero and proving the power that the children of Aphrodite held, Percy Jackson would have no choice but to pay attention to her. And once he paid attention, well, the rest would be easy.

Andromeda sighed and sat up, shaking the flakes of sand that clung to her hair and cast her gaze to the water. Small rays of sunlight started to peek through the clouds and cast a light on the waves. It wasn't until the light hit a certain angle that the girl noticed movement from within it, something seemed to be swimming up toward the surface at an alarming speed. Furrowing her brows she learned forward, attempting to get a better look, but whatever it was broke the surface and shot out of the water, causing a huge wave to hit the shore along with the girl sitting on it. The cold temperature of the water caused her to let out a scream, scooting back and away from whatever rose out of the water.

"Oh Gods, Andromeda? Are you okay?"

The girl took a moment to wipe the water out of her eyes, shivering at how cold the breeze now felt. She looked up to see Percy now kneeling beside her, but there wasn't a drop of water on him despite him just flying out of the ocean.
