CHAPTER 5
“Claire!”
I open my eyes wearily.
I don’t know how long I’ve been asleep, but I feel very lethargic.
“Claire!”
I glance up at the shadowy ceiling. Leon must still be hanging there. I can only imagine the pain in his arms and legs!
“What’s going on?” I ask softly.
He releases a deep sigh.
“You’re all right! I feared something happened to you! You were quiet for so long,” he murmurs.
“Sorry,” I whisper. “I must have dozed off. Do you know how long its been since they were in here?”
There’s a pause for a moment as Leon gathers his thoughts.
“I’m not sure. I would reckon it’s been a day already,” he says.
I slowly ease myself up into a standing position. I reach my arms upwards, but grasp at the empty air. I’m too short to reach the ceiling.
“Are you alright?” I ask uncertainly.
Leon releases a small bark of a laugh.
“I’m hanging from a ceiling! What do you think?” he mutters.
Good point.
“Leon,” I begin, hesitantly. As far as I can tell, Leon seems like a pretty loyal guy. Which makes what I’m about to suggest a little risky.
“What is it, Claire?” he asks.
I take a deep breath.
“You were a knight in the king’s army, weren’t you?” I murmur.
“That’s right. Up until the day I was told to guard you,” he says.
I nod to myself.
“You know the royal family then,” I add.
He hesitates for a moment. “To a certain extent, yes, I suppose I do. What are you getting at?”
