(I just wanna state there is no spencie poo or the bad bitches in this chapter. It's more of getting to know our main character and her background. And I'm not apologizing because it's my book and I don't really care what you say so...enjoy!)
~"Evil is not something superhuman, it's something less than human." - Agatha Christie
~
There are moments in your life where you just wish you could live in your dreams instead. Because sometimes those dreams are better than your reality. Even if those dreams are nightmares.
When Eden Ellis was just a baby, moments after she was born, her mother passed. Her mother departed holding her daughter before taking her last breath. According to her grandmother, her mother's last words were, "You've only been in the world for a couple of minutes and I already know you will change it. Diminish the evil, my love, become the good." and with that, she was gone.
And her father couldn't take it.
Day after day, drink after drink, no matter how much alcohol he savored, he couldn't forget how the love of his life died, and he placed the fault on a three-day-old baby.
So, he decided to give up as a father. Give up as a parent and leave her with her grandparents. They could do better than he could and he knew it would be too hard to try. He knew this isn't what his wife would want, but he couldn't look at that baby without seeing his wife in her eyes. His dead wife's eyes in the person who took her from him. With that, he ran from his past, ran from his future, ran from Eden.
Eden grew up knowing her mother passed from childbirth but thinking her dad was never in the picture, even during the pregnancy.
Her grandparents wanted the best for her. They wanted her to grow up with ease and to fulfill her mother's wishes. But things aren't always as simple as that. And when Eden was five, her grandpa was diagnosed with liver cancer.
All of her grandma's attention was turned towards him. And being the bright kid she was, she understood. She decided to help her grandma out, the same way she's been helping her. She made it look as though she was growing up with ease. She read books above her grade level, learned words above her usual vocabulary, and passed her classes with flying colors. She wanted her grandma to be able to take care of her grandpa, so hopefully, he could see the day she diminishes the evil.
That day didn't come.
He passed when she was eight. Which caused her grandmother to spiral into a depressive state, but unlike Eden's father, she stayed. Her husband's death prompted her to tell Eden the truth about her father. That he chose to leave. Eden was young but intelligent, and she understood his side, but still wished he could've stayed. Wished he could've tried.
Now Eden wanted to help her grandma further. She helped by not bothering her. She didn't need to worry about her. She needed to help herself first. And Eden was more than capable of taking care of herself. She excelled in school and read many books, her favorites being murder mysteries, she liked being able to put the pieces together in her head and figure out who the perpetrator was before the detective could. This inspired her to look into a career as some sort of investigator.
So after graduating high school at the age of thirteen, she quickly got into college. She got accepted into UPenn and while she could've gone to bigger colleges, she wanted to stay close to her grandma. She ended up getting two PhDs in Philosophy and Criminology and two BA's in forensics and sociology.
After going to a law enforcement academy for three months, the FBI saw her abilities and her expertise and decided to make a couple of exceptions for her and it only took a few years in the field before getting a job. Eden ended up working in the Philadelphia field office for two years, before she got transferred to the Behavior Analysis Unit in Quantico, Virginia.
Her grandmother stayed back to help her ability to focus on her job and not have to take care of someone. So she went because begging doesn't help much when someone has already made their decision. She felt terrible for leaving her grandma but was excited to move forward. Excited to fulfill her mom's wish.
And today was the day. The first day at the BAU.
"Oh God I'm gonna throw up, " she thought to herself in her car, "it's okay Eden, everything will be okay as long as you don't throw up on yourself. It took you a while to find a nice top that actually decided to fit sufficiently."
She got out of the car and looked at the massive building. Walking up to the entrance she thought to herself,
"Maybe I'll stay in my reality for a little bit."
