"How's it looking out there, Kat?" Sam, one of the three girls, asked. She stared down at her phone in boredom.
"If I could see past the damn hood I'd tell you." Indeed, the fog was impenetrable, even with Kat's brights on, there wasn't much to do in order to clear the thick grey mist. Evie, the third of the trio of friends, looked out the window, though it wasn't of much use.
"Are you sure we took a right turn? We're supposed to be on the highway. It sounds like we're on gravel." She mumbled in suspicion."Well, this is the way Marissa told me to go, unless we took a wrong turn… then if we find a strange middle-of-nowhere gas station, we'll ask a weird old man where the right way is." Kat spoke, looking at her friend from the rearview mirror.
"Then, he'll speak in riddles and tell us to go the complete opposite way that we're supposed to go. And then we'll get murdered… C'mon Kat, I thought you knew these things!" Sam pipes up, glancing from her phone. Kat retorted with a scoff and then "You know I hardly ever watch scary movies!"
Sam rolled her eyes, a playful grin started to form on her lips. The two began bickering, mostly about the possibility of getting murdered by inbred hillbillies while Evie merely stared out the window. Gravel roads turned to muddy dirt as the car continued to push through the seemingly endless fog. The radio hissed before cutting out entirely.
"Welp, now we're definitely going to get killed," Sam spat, flicking through the radio stations. Not a single one seemed to work. "none of the stations work…" She turned off the radio, halting the white noise. In return, the inside of the car went eerily silent.
"Maybe we should go back? The roads aren't even roads anymore. It's all just dirt." Evie's voice broke out from the sudden silence."Are you sure? I could've sworn this was the way that Marissa sai-" before being able to finish, something made the car jolt upward. Kat yelped, a sudden flash of fear struck her face as she shoved her foot to the brake. The car slid against the muddy road until it stopped.
"I think I hit something! Shit-" Kat muttered, glancing out the back window with the rearview mirror. Her hand slithered to the door handle, yet Evie stopped her before the action could be completed.
"Well don't get out! I have no idea what kind of critters lurk in Arizona and I don't feel like finding out! Especially if Sam and I need to pull your upper half away from some sort of carnivorous monster while it's chewing on your legs.""But what if I hit a hiker or something! I might've killed them!" Kat sputtered, her morals getting ahead of her logic.
"And what if that "hiker" has friends and as soon as you get out: you're just as good as dead." Sam warned, her brows furrowed together. Kat turned her head to glance at her friend, concern for whatever she had hit. Her hand gripped the handle as she opened the door.
Unlocking her seatbelt, she gets out of the car. Sam growled and undoes her own seatbelt before following Kat; muttering under her breath. Evie, against her better judgement, goes after her two friends.Kat looks behind the car, yet doesn't see anything that she could've hit. Sam and Evie checked around the car, and Sam noticed the lack of air in the front two tires.
"Hey… the tires popped." She spoke up, checking each tire.
"I didn't bring any spares." Kat continued to look for possible reasons as to what she ran over- then, she saw what caused it.
A large chunk of umber with a spiral of sharp barbed wire coiled around it lied in the middle of the road"What the fuck?" She seethed, her hands clenched into fists. Kat swiveled around.
"What?" Evie called out to her, pushing up her glasses. Standing up, the young woman worked her way to her friend.
"Someone planted some trap or some shit! Who the fuck does that?" Kat yelled, now enraged at the fact that her car is ruined. The dark, foggy, and rocky woodlands seemed to silence at Kat's sudden outburst. The quietness somewhat frightened the ladies. None of them felt the courage to speak up to break the silence. Except for Sam, whose voice broke the stillness."Can we call anyone? There's gotta' be something we can do to get the fuck out of here!" She clicked on her phone, her eyes darted from spot to spot on the screen.
"There's nothing out here, Sam! We're in the middle of ass-fuck nowhere! We're just going to have to keep going and pray to God that there's someone nearby." Evie spat, throwing up her hands. Kat shifted, her anger slowly contorted into discomfort. It's much too quiet, and the darkness doesn't help that fact.
As the trio go back to the car, they pick out everything they can take with them that'd be of use or value. Purses, camping backpacks, and whatever happens to be in their way."Marissa is never allowed to send us directions again, that's for damn fucking sure." Kat reached into her backpack, pulling out a flashlight. Turning it on, the light is hardly able to cut through the seemingly thickening fog. Though the light barely shined for more than a few meters in front of them, the illumination gave the young women a sense of security.
The three began walking further on the road, leaving their car and the strange trap in the middle of the dirt track. As Kat led the way, they walked in silence, that is, until the silhouette of roofs peeked out from among the trees. A sudden feeling of excitement shot through the ladies as their pace quickened.
"Finally! For lord's sake, I thought we would be walking forever…" Sam piped up dramatically, a smile reaching the corners of her mouth. The other two couldn't help but do the same. Continuing to walk toward the area of interest, they hear someone mutter something- it sounded as if it were a prayer of some sort. It was quiet, yet loud enough for one of the ladies to hear it.
"I never took you for a very religious person, Evie." Kat mumbled, to which Evie looked to her friend in confusion.
"I didn't say anything. What the hell are you on?"So, Kat dismissed it simply with, "Guess I'm going bat shit crazy." They approached one of the many houses. As Sam knocked on the door, it softly creaked as it opened. She swiveled her head around to her friends before stepping a foot into the house.
"Hey, anyone home? Our car got busted and we wanted to know if you had any spare tires." Despite her speaking, only the darkness replied. Curiosity got the better of her, and she stepped in, along with her equally intrigued friends.
