"Five... four... three... two... one!"

Then the bell rang, but was barely audible because everyone was screaming. All the students were rushing out the doors in a heap, and I lost sight of Samantha.

"Sami?" I called, but I couldn't even hear my voice. I was shoved through the doors in a wave of smiles and backpacks and I finally got a breath of fresh air.

"Asiago!" Came Samantha's voice from my left. Upon seeing her, I jogged toward her, and we moved quickly toward her truck.

Oh, I'm Asiago Matthews. Asi. Yes, like the cheese, but I prefer to say I'm named after the place. Samantha Matthews is my sister. We live with our Grandmother, Kathy, who doesn't pay almost any attention to us at all. And when she does, she's more than likely screaming at us for something we didn't do. I hate living there, but I don't really have a choice. I'm broke and my parents died when I was eleven. Or no, they didn't officially die, they just went missing. But that was eight years ago.

Samantha is twenty one. I'm nineteen. We could've gone to Texas A&M, but when our parents died, we were forced to move to Utah with Kathy. Despite our athletic scholarships (mine is for track and field and Samantha's is for cheerleading), we couldn't afford it... so we went to Salt Lake Community College. Which was fine, I mean, the people were okay there.

I'm insecure and quiet and I don't really have friends besides Samantha. I'm five feet even with straight ginger hair that goes down to my chest area. And freckles, lots of freckles. I'm not really good looking. I'm not busty like Samantha or cute like her friend Taylor, I'm just sort of there. I am pround of my legs, though. They're strong from running. I love to run.

Samantha is gorgeous. Everyone loves her. She's five foot four with long blonde hair and clear, doll-like skin. She applies makeup every morning, but she doesn't need it. Sami always has a boyfriend, but she's never cheated. She likes to believe that everyone is worth something, even if they aren't. She always gives second chances, and always ends up with a broken heart. You'd never see her cry, though; Samantha doesn't want people to feel bad for her. I like to think of her as my best friend. She's really my only friend. She's the only one who understands why I do what I do.

"Asi," Samantha said. We'd made it to her truck by then. "You know that invitation I got? For the South America thing."

"Yeah?" I replied, buckling up and sighing a bit too loudly. I leaned back in the passenger seat.

Sami is really smart. She gets all A's and is in the National Honors Society. So her biology teacher does this thing every year where she gathers her six best students and allows them each to bring one friend on a trip to South America - Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, and Argentina. The trip is always planned for a week after summer begins. I never went, though, Sami could never convince her biology teacher to let her bring two buddies. She wanted me to come, but I always told her to bring one of her friends. So she did. Plus, I'm cool with the pictures.

"They're allowing me to bring two people with me. I'm thinkin' you and Two-by."

"Yay!" I said as enthusiastically as I could manage. I sat up straight and hugged her from the passenger seat, smiling brightly.

Two-by Cobb is Samantha's best guy friend. She's known him since we moved to Utah. I like him. He's quiet like me and really tall, blonde, and skinny (not really skinny, but healthy). Six and a half feet tall, I think. He's not that smart nor athletic, but he's really, really nice. Everyone likes him. Two-by and I talk sometimes, which is probably why I like him. He treats me like his best friend, even though I don't really consider him a friend. It's the way he treats everyone.

I never really understood why people always called him Two-by. His real name is Toby. Toby Jason Cobb. When I asked Samantha about his nickname, she started laughing hysterically and said it's a long story. A long story that I never got to hear. It must've been a while ago, though; He started going by Two-by when he was eighteen, two years ago.

So after driving around for a bit in Sami's truck, we ended up going to Applebees to celebrate the end of school. Well, school ending was Samantha's excuse, but we both knew we just didn't want to see Kathy. I ordered steak and she ordered chicken salad, and we both got mountain dew, as usual.

We were going to leave after about thirty minutes but Samantha met up with some friends and it was 10:30 before we called it quits and headed back to Kathy's house. Upon arrival, Kathy proceeded to scream at us, using her usual 'where've you been' or 'I was so worried,' even though she'd never be worried. Then we just went straight to sleep, too tired to even change clothes.
