Nobunaga and his warlords had departed for battle two days ago--
I was left in charge of the camp and directing treatment for the wounded.
. . . The few incoming wounded are the only source of information I've got. But there hasn't been a report on Nobunaga. Of course, getting so little wounded is a good thing in itself. The sun was shining. But I couldn't say I was enjoying the perfect weather. I thought some fresh air would do me good. But it just reminds me of how empty the camp feels without the warlords here.
I was on my way back to my tent when I heard a voice, no more than a whisper.
???: "Mai."
Mai: "Who--? Oh, Sasuke, it's you!"
Sasuke: "Yes, I'm sorry to surprise you. How have you been? Battle excluded."
Mai: "Oh, you know. Pretty good. I suppose. Um, should we be talking here?"
Sasuke: "We most definitely shouldn't. It would be very bad if I were caught."
Mai: "Should we 'take a walk' then?"
Sasuke: "If you're available. There is something I need to talk to you about."
Mai: "Yeah, I got it."
------------
Sasuke: "This should be far enough." Sasuke made a quick scan of the clearing. He removed his facemask. "Mai, I came to let you know it's been almost three months since our arrival."Mai: "Has it? Time sure flies when time travel is involved."
Sasuke: "Indeed. In fact, time's insistence on moving is one of our problems."
Mai: ". . . I don't like how that sounds." His stony expression confirmed my fears.
Sasuke: "In just three days, the wormhole was supposed to manifest at Honno-ji in Kyoto. That is no longer the case."
Mai: "What's our latest forecast?"
Sasuke: "It will still appear in three days, but the location has moved rather significantly. According to my calculations, the new location is Ishiyama Hongan-ji." Where have I heard that before? Wait . . . That's Kennyo's temple! The one Nobunaga burned down! Given the hatred I'd seen in Kennyo's eyes, HE hadn't forgotten about that. "It is correct to say the wormhole will be manifesting in the ruins of Hongan-ji. . . . As that is all that remains."
Mai: "But Sasuke, why would the wormhole switch locations so dramatically?"
Sasuke: "I cannot say without more research. But I can speculate based on several curious connections. We were first sent through time at the Honno-ji memorial. And you were sent back in time to the night of the famous incident. There, you saved Nobunaga Oda's life from his would-be assassin in this timeline, Kennyo. The wormhole that would send us back to the present now appears to be manifesting in Hongan-ji . . . A landmark representative of their struggle."
Mai: "Come to think of it, that could even be where this divergent timeline began, right? Sasuke, do you think our wormhole has an interest . . . or even a grudge against them?" What kind of alternate universe hijinks are we mixed up in?!
Sasuke: "Potentially. And there's one more concern."
Mai: "Oh boy . . ." More bad news?
Sasuke: "Regarding the divergent timeline, it has begun to shift drastically since your rescuing of Nobunaga. Even though it was the wormhole that allowed it to occur in the first place."
