It lurks in the dark

"TREVOR!" I yelled. My little brother had put mayo in my tube of toothpaste. He was a prankster, but his little pranks always got on my nerves. I looked all around our house trying to find him, but I couldn't. I couldn't even find my parents. I ran outside and no one was there. I checked the garage both cars still in there, but no sign of my brother or parents. I was starting to freak out. Where could they have gone?
Then, I heard scraping in the basement. Of    course, the one place I didn't look, and for good reason too. Our basement was one of those creepy ones. The one with cement walls, ceiling, and floor. The one with the loud, creaky steps that never quieted. The one with the one light in the middle of the basement that didn't even light it up all the way.
No one in their right mind would go to the basement.
  No one.
But maybe that's why they went done there, because I would expect it. I walked towards the basement and very slowly opened the basement door, it squeaked as I did so. As soon as the door was all the way open, I peaked to see if anyone was there. No one was. I very slowly took each loud, creaky step down into the basement. When I got the last step, I tried looking around. But everything beyond that was complete darkness. I was almost turned around to run back up the steps when I heard the same scraping sound. "Hello?" I called. There was no response. "Hello?" I called again. That's when I heard it, the scraping noise. This time louder and closer. "Is someone there?" I asked. No response. I was starting to get freaked out. "If-if someone's there, make yourself known." I said to the darkness, fear leaking into my voice.
I took my foot off the last step and put it on the concrete floor. After sitting there, my heart ponding, and my ears listening to every little sound, I put my other foot on the cold, concrete floor. "Hello!" I called out again, louder then before. This time instead of scraping, I heard a small growl. So small that if I hadn't been listening for anything, I would've missed it. My gut kept telling me to turn back, but my curiosity was getting the best of me. I took a deep breath and put my other foot in the darkness, swallowing me.

The girl was about to call out, but something grabbed her ankle and dragged her into the darkness. An hour later, her parents and her brother returned from an afternoon walk. They looked all around for the girl but could not find her. They later filed a missing persons report, not knowing what had happened in their basement. The terrible haunting things. And if they went looking they would find nothing, but they might just end the same as the girl.
