You couldn't breathe. Everything seemed to lose sense. The air seemed to suffocate your lungs, while the picture became black and white. You couldn't hear the doctor talking anymore. The words just kept repeating in your head.
'We lost him.'
It was an old family curse. It kept skipping generations, including you, but never have you expected, that the curse would fall on your son. Your 3 year old gorgeous son, whose birthday was soon in a month. You already bought her a golden necklace. It ran in your family and it represented your side of the family, the (Y/L/M) family. Giving your grandfathers golden necklace to when he turned four years old, Oliver and you decided to give one to your daughter too. A brand new one, presenting the purity of life.
Katie.
She suddenly entered you mind. How will you tell her that her little brother is gone? She loved him so much. She couldn't even sleep in her own bed, when the two of you brought her home. She watched him like a hawk and the only way to let her sleep in her own bed was to bring it to the nursery.
You looked over to your husband. He sat on one of the chairs next to you, staring at the distance. His eyes were lost and so were his thoughts. He couldn't believe it. His little boy was gone. The boy who he swore to protect with his life on the day he was born.
"Ollie." you whispered, squeezing his hand.
He looked at you on the verge of tearing out but seeing your wet cheeks and your broken eyes, red and swollen from all the rubbing, he knew he needed to be strong. He needs to be strong. For you and for Katie.
"We need to tell Katie. How will we tell her?" you spoke quietly with a brittle voice.
"I don't know. " he replied and put his other hand on top of yours. "I don't know." he repeated in a mumble.

Opening the door to your house felt harder that you thought. You could still smell his shampoo as you walked in and hear his giggle in the living room with Oliver playing with him. The memories in this house were too much for you to handle at this moment.
"I can't." you mumbled quietly, squeezing Oliver's hand while stepping away from the stairs. "I can't Oliver. It hurts."
He pulled you into a hug and let you cry in his arms. You wrapped your arms around him and gripped him tighter. You knew he was bottling it inside, trying to stay strong for the both of you. And you knew you weren't helping him at this moment, but it hurt.
It just couldn't be true. It simply couldn't.
"We need to tell her. She's his sister. She'll start asking questions if we don't tell her." he spoke in your ear, pulling you tighter in his arms.
"Mum? Dad?" you heard a voice come from upstairs.
You pulled away from Oliver and turned to the staircase. A small, seven year old girl stood on the stairs in her green PJ's.
Seeing her messy hair as she rubbed her tired eyes, you quickly wiped your tears away and put on a smile. "Hey honey. What are you doing up?"
She slowly came downstairs and stopped as soon as she realised someone is missing. "Where is Thomas?" he asked seriously.
You knelt down to her and took her hands. "Your brother...." you hesitated a bit, trying to form the right sentence in your head. "He isn't coming back."
Her face became more serious now. She looked up to Oliver and back to you. "Why?" she asked confused.
You couldn't. You simply couldn't do it. Her eyes were looking for answers you couldn't tell. It hurt and it squeezed and it stabbed and it bruised.
"Well...umm.." you stumbled through words until you felt Oliver's arm around his shoulder as he knelt down next to you.
"He was ill. " he spoke softly, trying not to break down in front of the two of you as he spoke those words.
"Ill?" she quivered, furrowing his eyebrows. " I didn't know he was ill? Is he staying with Doctor Pomfrey?"
"Katie..." he sighed, trying to explain what had just happened.
But it was hard. He couldn't. He couldn't do it either.
"Your brother got ill and as much of a fight as he put up, it wasn't enough " Oliver explained
Katie was confused. She didn't know what his father meant by 'it wasn't enough'.
"Does that mean he died? Did he go to heaven?" she asked.
"Yes. He went to heaven." said Oliver quietly and felt a tear finally roll down his cheek.
Katie's expression stayed the same. She switched her gaze between her father and her mother as they stared at her reaction.
"Can I go back to sleep now?" she asked out of the blue.
Oliver and you looked at each other. Both of you were shocked by HER reaction. Did that mean she didn't understand what the two of you tried to tell her?
"Honey, I think you don't understand. Your brother won't be coming back." you spoke quetly.
"I know. He is with grandpa now." she smiled and walked a few stairs up before she turned around again.
"He's an angel now. An angel watching over us and keeping us safe. He's our angel." she added and ran upstairs.
