So much chaos in Illea, for we were at war with New Asia.
King Clarkson-my father- and I have been working to make amends between our two countries for a while now, however things have only been getting worse.
"You need to start the Selection process, Maxon. We need something to distract Illea with everything that is going on." Insisted King Clarkson.
The Selection is when a prince draws out the names of 35 eligible women to come to the palace. Then, the prince decides out of the 35 women, which one he wants to marry and rule beside him as the Queen of Illea.
The prince is supposed to say when he is ready for this time in his life. I was not ready. I wanted to focus on becoming King.
"But father, why? You said that we would work on this together, but now your just trying to push me towards something I'm not ready for. Just because you want to deceive your people?"
"Maxon, we don't need the people to worry. We have everything under control, I am only protecting them. Perhaps you should take a break from your royal duties for awhile to prepare yourself for the upcoming announcement."
I was not happy. My father promised that I could take part in the work of a King, instead he is pushing me away and using me as his pawn-so typical of him.
I decided I would go talk to my mother, Queen Amberley, who was in the Women's parlor.
When the maid told her I needed her, she came out into the hallway because men were not allowed inside the parlor unless given permission.
"Mother, father wants me to start the Selection process."
"Well, I think that is a great idea! You need to take a break and it'll give the people of Illea something to look forward to. Besides, I think your ready to settle down and find the right girl."
This is not what I wanted to hear.
With my face tense, I took in every word my mother said. She was entered into the Selection process when she was my age and ended up marrying my father.
They've been together ever since. And I trusted my mother, so maybe it was time that I started the Selection.
"You're right. I'll go tell father, I'm sure he'll be happy."
Even though I hated to admit that my father was right, I decided I would go talk to him immediately about starting the whole process.
He was happy of course, and wanted to make the announcement this Friday on The Report, so we got to work right away.
Only little did I know that his idea of starting the Selection was not the same as mine.
He was choosing the majority of the girls that he wanted, to use them for his own good.
There were only two girls that I drew out. America Singer of Carolina- 5 and Marlee Tames of Kent- 4. He only let me draw girls from lower casts because he knew that they wouldn't make it within the first week.
Today was the start of a very long and hard time because I knew my father was going to have a say in everything no matter what.
All I can do is prepare myself for 35 women to come into the palace.
Everything is about to change.
