The crisp winter air bit into my lungs as my breath billowed before me. I didnt know how much longer I could keep going. I stopped a moment, resting my hands on my knees, trying to gather myself. Ide seen two die right before my eyes and Id be damned if I let it happen again. The screeching voices and wretched howls of pains echoed through my mind, blurring my vision, and causing me to squeeze my eyes shut, as if this could make the memories fade away. I had to keep going, keep moving, keep calling out.

I slowed raised my eyes to scan the landscape. A sofly rolling field rested before me, crisp winter grasses curled and crunched beneath my shoes. The bright sun reflected harshly from the glittery frost spotting the lower swales. I squinted into the light and saw a brief flash off to the right, up at the crest of the hill. As I blinked it disappeared and I sighed in frustration. Thats where I had to go.
