"But, Dad, why do I have to go? It's not like you're going to ever let me fight anyway?"
My dad sighs, and from the grid, I can see that he is dragging a hand down his face.
"Look, the Ari pack had the best fighters, and they train their members to fight with both their wolf and human forms. And I want you to go because they also work with blind, or deaf wolves, and they can train you to at least defend yourself properly."
"Yeah, but I'm not completely blind, Dad, and you're the Alpha! You can just get guards, or something!" I exclaim, and he rolls his eyes, continuing to pack my bags.
My name's Venice, Venice Pipe. I live in the Emerald pack. This is in Alaska, but if my dad follows through with his "great idea," then I'll be traveling to California to love with the Ari pack for a year.
The Ari pack is one of the fiercest packs in the United States, and Dad is planning on sending me there for training. The Ari pack is tied for first fiercest pack with the Grimm pack. The Alphas are brothers, but still enemies. They keep attacking each other. Apparently there is a serious feud, and it can't be resolved because the packs are equal in power.
I'm blind, but not completely. I don't see colors, or exact pictures, but I see in a grid like picture. There are sounds everywhere, and when they make sound waves and they hit an objects, I see that object as a white silhouette in a black picture. It's harder to see stuff in the air, but if it's touching the ground I can see it clearly right away.
And it does come with some cool advantages. Since I can't see, it enhanced my other senses. I can hear, smell, feel, and taste better.
But I can't see what people look like. I can only see their shapes. I can't tell what color their eyes or hair are, or their fur color. But I can see if they're short, tall, fat, skinny, etc.
But I have been told what I look like in great detail by many people, even though I have never seen myself.
I have long, wavy black hair, electric blue eyes, and apparently I'm average height. I have tan skin, and a small nose.
I'm told that my wolf looks very similar. Most people resemble their wolf. If you have brown hair, brown eyes, and you're tiny, then your wolf will look like that.
My wolf has shiny black fur, which is really soft, and blue eyes. My wolf is between average and large. Not one or the other.
And let me get this straight. All those stories about wolves speaking to their humans and being able to control them; big lie. Our wolf is just a form, and we have their instincts and abilities and some wild and feral personalities, but we cannot speak or ask them for advice. They cannot control us whatsoever.
But we can speak to each other in our wolf form. It's called a pack link, and it's awesome. We can transfer words, images, emotions, just about everything.
My older brother, Louis, will take over the pack when he turns nineteen, in a few months. This is custom for the eldest son of an Alpha.
I'm the youngest in my family. I'm seventeen. Kaden and Riley are the twins, and they're eighteen. And Brody and Michael are also twins, nine months older than Kaden and Riley but still eighteen.
Dad says that when Louis becomes Alpha of the pack, he'll be so relieved. There's no Luna, since Mom died six years ago in a raid. We were visiting South Dakota as a family, and the Elias pack attacked. They're the fourth most powerful, behind us, and I guess they wanted to move up in rank.
So here I am, sulking in my room while my dad packs my clothes in a suitcase.
Every pack had their own colors. Ours was black and green, so that's what we wear. Where I'm heading, it's just black. But Dad said to wear a black bracelet with my name and pack on it in green, so they don't attack me. Apparently I'm supposed to wear black clothing there, but the bracelet to identify me. So Dad is packing me completely black clothes, so I can fit in better.
You know that saying, "You never miss something until it's gone?" Well, I always thought my pack was boring, but now I dread leaving it.
I'm going to miss my best friends, Victoria and Bo. They're the Beta and Third's daughter and son. Victoria is Beta Jack's daughter, and Bo is Gamma Duke's son.
And I'm going to miss my brothers, and Dad. I'm going to miss the cold weather of Alaska. I thought about it, and since California is farther south than Alaska, my wolf coat will be too thick for the weather there.
I sigh, and get up. It was almost dinner time, but I didn't want anything to eat. "Hey, Dad, I'm gonna go for a run."
I didn't leave him enough time to protest, because I was already jumping out of my bedroom window. Thanks to my grid vision, I had no trouble with walking or running. Jumping was a problem, though, because since my feet weren't touching the ground, they aren't moving anything, like a small rock or dirt, and since nothing is moving I can't see all that well.
I go into the woods, and shift into my wolf. We didn't need to undress, because when we shift our clothes melt into our skin.
I shake out my fur, and start to run. I loved running, because since there was so much force coming down on the ground when my paws hit the ground, the sound waves traveled farther, therefore I can see farther. And I also loved moving fast. The wind, adrenaline, and the feeling of going so fast that you feel like flying.
I had no special spot in the woods. I have not found any cave or spring or rock formation that nobody knows about. But I just like running, and since I don't have to open my eyes to see, the wind won't bother them, so I can close my eyes.
Because my four other senses were enhanced, I could hear the animals running home at night, and feel the wind on my face better. It was amazing, having this experience, so running all night, nonstop, didn't bother me.
But when I got to the pack house, I could tell it bothered my family. My dad and brothers were sitting on the couch, waiting for me to come back. And when I came through the door, they were all distressed.
I came into the living room, and they immediately ran over and hugged me. I was awkwardly standing there as they checked me for injuries.
"Guys, why so much attention? I've ran alone before, and you've never acted like this," I said, and everyone looked at Dad.
"Venice, Jack was doing rounds with other pack members, and they found a rogue, running to your running path," he replied, and I raised my eyebrows.
"You know you could have just used the pack link," I suggest, and he sighs.
"We couldn't. If we used the pack link, you would run back here, and the rogue would have caught you. We disposed of him already, without any information. But still. He was between you and the pack house, and if you can closer, then he would scent you and attack."
I blow out a breathe, and push my hair back. "Well, what did he want?" I ask, and sit down on a stool. They hadn't rearranged the furniture in awhile, so I knew where everything was.
"Well," Dad says, "he didn't say anything, but it was clear he wanted something here. Rogues know not to come onto our territory."
"Well, fine. I'm leaving in the morning anyway, so it's not like I'm going to be in any danger," I say, and turn around on the stool, so I'm facing the marble island. There was a bowl of jerky, and it smelled really good.
I plucked a few strips from the bowl, and ate them. I loved jerky, especially when it was seasoned.
"Well, I ran all night, and I'm tired. Good night," I announce, and walk through the living room, and up the stairs. I go into my room, and over to the vanity table. It had a mirror, even though I couldn't use it, but it held my books and hair brush.
My room was great. I had a black shaggy carpet, with green walls and black swirls on it. I had a black and green bed, and white doors for the bedroom door and bathroom door. I had a black dresser, nightstand, and 2 white windows with green curtains and black blinds. Since I was one of the Alpha's children, I was expected to have a black and green bedroom, just like my brothers. My bathroom was nothing special. Black shower curtain, green sink and bathtub/shower, marble countertops and cupboard, and a white toilet and closet door.
I literally jump into bed after closing my window and curtains, and get under the covers.
I had to leave tomorrow morning. Dad was going to run with me to California, and get me settled into the Ari pack house. I was going to stay there for a year, so he needed to make sure everything was set.
We had to get there by at least Wednesday night, and today was Saturday.
I just hope that it won't be totally awful. When there is a number one most powerful pack, they tend to be strong, mean, and ruthless. But I'm being taught to use my blindness to my advantage.
But my only fear is that they won't train me. They train wolves with disadvantages, but not like mine. Yeah, there are a bunch of blind werewolves, but they don't see grids. They don't see anything at all.
Nobody ever figured out why I could see the way I do. And Dad didn't tell the Ari pack that I could do this. If they thought training me would be too complicated, or that I was a threat to them, they might say no to training me. This was what I was worried about.
But I can't worry about it, because it might not happen. Don't stress about the past, it's gone; live in the present, it's the only thing that's happening; and don't worry about the future, it hasn't happened yet.
So I can only hope that it goes well. Because if it doesn't, there will always be a grudge between our packs, and I don't want that.
