School Days

"Hey! New girl! Wake up! Time for school!"
I wake up to somebody shaking me, and my eyes snap open. Somebody was shaking me. Oh yeah! School!
I get up, and stretch. I hear laughing, and I look over to my door. Oh great, like four guys were standing inside my doorway.
"Hey, Aaron, I'm pretty sure she isn't the type of girl to want to see you and your friends watching her when she gets up. Now get out!"
Yep, that was a girl. I hear scuffling, and my bedroom door shuts.
"Who were they?" I ask the girl, and add, "Who're you?"
"I'm Lena. And those boys were the pack players. They sleep with everybody, especially Sabrina and her clique. Cliche, I know."
I nod my head, and go over to my dresser. I kneel down in front of one of the drawers, and open it. I feel around until I feel a familiar fabric.
"Are these jeans?" I ask, and hold them up to Lena. "Yeah," she replies.
I search around for a few more items. After holding them up to Lena to make sure that they're actually what I think that they are, I'm left with black skinny jeans, a black tank top and crop top, and black flats.
"So you're the blind girl, right?" Lena asks, and I nod my head.
"You know, there are rumors going around that you see grids," she says.
Oh God. Already? I didn't even know how they got around.
"Well, I gotta brush my hair, and do my stuff, I guess," I announce, and walk into the bathroom.
I start brushing my hair out. I never really paid any attention to how odd I must have looked in Alaska until now. All of the other pack members were fair skinned, with light hair.
But now I was wondering if my family had any heritage from other countries, like Italy, or Spain. Spain would certainly explain our hair and skin.
When my hair was all brushed out, I leave it just falling around my shoulders. My hair reached a little lower than middle back, so it was long.
I do all my bathroom stuff. Deodorant, teeth, wash my face, and do all that other stuff.
I walk out of the bathroom, through the bedroom, and make my way downstairs. I was just walking through the living room, when I smelled pancakes.
I walked into the kitchen, and find that the entire pack house was in here.
There were a bunch of other houses scattered around pack territory, but I guess that a lot of other people lived in the pack house. It seemed like mostly teenagers, though.
I looked around, but nobody seemed to be paying attention to me. They were passing around breakfast food and talking. A lot of the teenagers had school bags set down by their chairs.
"Venice! Come here!" I heard a voice say, and I saw Lena waving me over. She had saved a seat for me.
I make my way around the table, and sit down next to Lena. There was a plate in front of me, and I guess that Lena already stocked it for me.
By pure sense of smell, I knew that she put all the good stuff on it. Bacon, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, toast, eggs, and a cup of apple juice. I silently thanked her, and started eating.
"Hey, Lena?" I ask while stuffing a biscuit in my mouth. She looks at me, and that's my cue to go on.
"I realized that my dad didn't pack me a school bag. Do you have one I can use?"
She nods quickly. "I have one in the back of my car. You can ride with me to school."
I nod, and start eating the rest of my breakfast. It was really good. Whoever made it practically deserves an award.
Lena takes me outside, and reaches into the seat of her car. It was a Ford truck, and it was big. I didn't know what color it was, though.
She pulls out a one shoulder back pack. It was the kind that had one strap, and you stung it over your head and it hung on your back.
She handed it to me, and said, "When you get to school, the office will provide you with textbooks, notebooks, and all that other stuff because you're new. Come on, we need to get to school."
I get into the car, and she starts driving. Apparently there was a narrow path in the woods that was the route for the pack to get to the road.
It was subtle. It sort of resembled a walking path. The grass was cleared out, so all that was remaining on the road was soil. There were flowers and forest on each side, with long wavy grass. It was beautiful.
After we made it through, Lena started driving on the highway. There was a forest surrounding the roads, but once we got into the city there were only a few scattered around. But the city was still surrounded by trees.
"After school I should take you to the mall. Get you some clothes. And yes, I was the one who unpacked them. You need more shorts! I only saw, like, three pairs!" Lena exclaims, and I laugh.
"In Alaska, you can't really wear shorts. And we were in our wolf form mostly anyway. It was more convenient. We hunted, were warm, used the pack link, and overall enjoyed ourselves."
Lena thinks about this for a moment, and asks, "What was your school like back in Alaska?"
I smile. "Oh, it was great! We lived in the middle of the forest, with big open spaces and rivers, so our pack built a little all werewolf town. We built schools, and stores, and a bunch of stuff in there. And since it was an all werewolf school, we had some pretty fun athletic games. And we didn't have to hide. If you were on track team, or any sport really, you could have your team play in their wolf forms. Oh! Football that way was really fun! And even the girls were allowed to play too! It was great!"
Lena grins at me. "It must be pretty nice, not having to hide. Your hometown sounds great!"
"Yeah," I say, "maybe someday I could take you there for a visit. You would surely love it!"
She pointed out my window, and when I looked I realized that we had already gotten to school.
I hadn't paid much attention to the size when I came here other than it was large and had a lot of stuff, but it seemed much larger now that there were thousands of students wandering around.
"Come on, I'm going to take you to the office to get your schedule," Lena says, ad opens the door.
I follow at her side as she leads me through the parking lot, and into the first building. The office was at the very front of the building, a small room with a counter splitting half of it.
There were three people behind the counter. One of them had a computer in front of her, and folders scattered in front of her. The other two were walking around and checking papers and forms.
Lena walks ahead of me to the computer lady, who was a short plump woman.
"Hi, I need the schedule for Venice Pipe. She also came unprepared, so she needs her books and notebooks," Lena says politely, and the counter lady nods, pulling out stuff from a cabinet.
She stacks a bunch of stuff up in front of Lena, and on top she puts a paper.
"Here is your schedule, locker number, combination, textbooks, folders, notebooks, and directions," she says to me, and scoots it all further.
I pick it up, saying thank you, and Lena opens the door for me. She follows me out, and leads me into the cafeteria, where some people were sitting before school starts.
I set my stuff down, and Lena takes my schedule. She swears, and hands it to me. "It's in Braille, I can't read it."
I smirk at her, and take the schedule. I start to read it, and say, "I have...AP math, PE, science, lunch, literature, Latin? and study hall."
Lena squeals. "You have the same schedule as me! I get to lead you around!"
I gape at her. "You have Latin and AP math?" I ask, and she slaps my arm.
"Yeah, I'm smart too, you know. And I'm in track, so ha."
I start laughing, then slap my forehead. "Ugh! I don't have gym clothes!"
"It's okay. You can borrow mine. I always bring a back up incase the 'popular chicks' decide to pull a prank."
I raise my eyebrows, and she waves me off. I start to-neatly-stuff my books in my bag, and Lena gives me some pencils and stuff.
A bell goes off in the school, and I wince. "Come on, we gotta get to math," Lena says, and drags me through the halls.
It was chaos. People were running and pushing and shouting at each other, trying to get to their classes. Lena tried to get me to math unharmed, but once we got into the classroom somebody stepped on my foot, and we were late anyway.
Apparently math had started while people were still in the hall, and Lena and I were the only ones that were late. When we finally got into the classroom, the teacher stopped talking, and everybody looked at us.
"Mrs. Hall, you are late nearly every day, and somehow you managed to drag a new student into it with you," the teacher, Ms. Sharp, said, and looked at me.
"And you must be the new student. Just so you know, everyone in this current class is in the Ari pack, so speak freely of yourself. Come up here," Ms. Sharp says, and I look around.
She was right, everyone in this pack was a werewolf. I couldn't tell because of their features, but because they all had that aura of power. And yes, even Omegas had some power to distinguish them from humans.
I step up to the front of the classroom, and Ms. Sharp says, "Please, tell us about yourself."
I sigh. "Um, my name is Venice Pipe, my dad's the Alpha of the Emerald pack, and he sent me here to learn how to fight, since I'm blind..."
Some guy speaks up. "Hey! I remember you! You're that hot girl that ran into our territory last night!"
I look at him in astonishment. He was sitting in the back, his friends laughing with him. Well, jeez, he was bold.
I raise my eyebrows at him, and in response he says, "I was just speaking my mind."
I laugh sarcastically. "Please, if you spoke your mind, you'd be speechless."
The class goes up in a dull roar of laughter, and I smile to myself.
Ms. Sharp nods at me to take my seat, and I take it at a corner next to Lena. I lean over to her. "I didn't think that there was a class consisting only of werewolves."
Lena nods, and I pull out my notebook and a pencil. I couldn't read normal paper, since normal writing couldn't be felt, but Dad taught me to write anyway, since I would probably be expected.
But I knew how to spell, and read, but since I couldn't distinguish colors, if I tried to read a normal book, it would just appear like blank pages.
But if I pressed down on my paper hard enough with a sharp pencil, I could make indentions in the paper. Then later on I could feel the indented letters and read them. This is what I do when I have to write on paper, so I can read it and other people can see it. I didn't like it much, though, because after awhile my hand would hurt from the pressure.
But in class I had to rely on what the teacher was saying, because I can't actually read what she's writing on the board.
I can only feel and see obvious objects. I couldn't see what Louis's bracelet looked like because the shape of the wolves were too slight to make out the details. But if there was...a wall, and on that wall there were giant letters that stuck out, I could see that.
But describing what I could and could not see was difficult, because the abilities of sound waves were complicated, I guess.
In math, we were talking about dividing pi by it's square root, and dividing whole numbers and decimals by pi.
But when the bell rang and class was over, it was heaven on earth. I got up, and practically stampeded out of the classroom, Lena behind me.
"Let's get to PE!" Lena says, and takes me through the halls. I didn't know where everything was, so I let her take my arm and pull me toward the gym.
She pushes open two large doors, and it got hotter. We were outside.
Lena pulls me outside, and to a group of people, this time both humans and werewolves.
"Coach Ray! Coach Ray, this is the new girl, Venice Pipe!" Lena shouts, and the coach turns around. It also got everyone else's attention.
Coach Ray was a tall guy, slim but built. He was a werewolf, huh.
I get introduced to the coach, who tells me and Lena, who are apparently late once again, to go change in the indoor locker rooms.
Lena drags me inside, and I'm thankful for the sudden rush of cold air. It is so hot here, and I feel dead.
We go into the locker rooms, and Lena goes to one wall, which was lined with small lockers and stone benches. I laid down on one, and sighed. I felt the cold ache deep into my skin, but it was ruined when Lena threw clothes at my face.
"Go into the stall and change. Just so you know, I supplied you with a tank top, short shorts, tennis shoes, and socks. All of them are black," she adds, and I get up.
Once I get into the stall, I start changing into the clothes. Lena was about the same size as me, so the clothes were just fine.
I step out, fully clothed, and she takes my previous clothing, shoving it all into a small square locker that was obviously now mine.
She takes me back outside, where the group of probably forty student were waiting for my arrival.
I stood at the side with Lena, and put my hair into a braid over my shoulder. My black hair was shiny in the sunlight, and it looked good.
"Alright!" Coach started off. "Today we will be assessing your physical endurance abilities. You will be running the track today, and the person to run the most laps will win a free $200 dollar gift card to the local mall."
I heard groans, sighs, and shouts of excitement. I think you can guess who made which noises.
We all walked over to the track. There were ten lanes, so there would be four groups that run. The winners of each round will go to a final fifth round, and the winner of that will win the gift card.
The winner of the first round was Jean O'Brien, a werewolf.
The second round was Conner, who was in the class with me. And the winner of the third was Logan Shock, also a werewolf. It was obvious even before the race that werewolves would win.
I was in the last round, with nine other boys. There were only nine other girls who had been enrolled in this gym class, including Lena and I, and they had all been in the other rounds.
But it was in my favor that five out of the nine boys were humans. Though all of the nine boys were fit, they were large, and that would not help their speed. And they thought I was completely blind, so they would not be expecting me.
And since I was lean, and smaller, I would be faster than the others. But it wouldn't help me that-
And Coach blew the whistle. I shot off from my spot, and managed to get the lead. But I can't think that. The boys were already catching up to me, the humans behind us by at least twenty feet.
But even though I have not had any professional training, that is precisely the reason that Dad trained me to be able to escape in case of attack, and that included giving me tips and making me fast.
I had to jolt my weight forward, but I couldn't just step down with one foot and put all my weight on it. I had to be light on my feet, and quick about it.
The boys were just behind me now, and I pushed myself a little farther. But then I remembered, it wasn't a race. This was to see who could run the most laps, so all I had to do was run more than everybody else. I didn't have to be the fastest, I just had to endure running for the longest time. And I certainly wouldn't be able to do that if I used up all of my energy.
I slowed down a little bit, and let the boys get ahead of me. They turn their heads at me oddly, and I smirked. This seemed to slightly unnerve them, but not by a lot.
I took the momentary distraction to jump forward, so I was a bit ahead of them again. I grin at this. I didn't have to be ahead, but that doesn't mean I didn't like it.
I couldn't see the lane lines of the track, but I think I was doing a pretty good job at guessing. All I had to really do was stay between the two boys beside me, and I'd be fine.
We ran for awhile, neck and neck. I would slow down for a while, to save my energy, then I would bound forward and make them nervous. This makes them a little tired, because when you're worrying about something, you become more tired.
Soon the four guys and I had run ten laps around the track, and we were still running. It turned into fifteen...twenty...twenty nine...thirty four...
I have no idea how long we ran the track, but we weren't making progress. The humans had dropped out long ago, but werewolves could run in both forms for hours at a time.
None of us had dropped out yet, and we were all in first place. All of us were in a line, no one behind or ahead.
But soon enough Coach said that the five of us had all won, because gym class was over. We would all be competing with the four other victors tomorrow.
He dismissed us all to the locker rooms to get changed and showered. Once I got changed, put up Lena's gym clothes, and changed into my own, I walk out of the locker room with Lena, and she leads me away.
"We have science next," Lena says. "We're making a garden, and as it grows we'll be observing the bugs, and how it grows, and how the fruits and vegetables growing there effect the soil."
I nod, and she pulls me back outside after I grab my bag. I let her guide me through the school grounds.
I really wasn't happy about having to go back outside. Even the inside of the school was really hot, but it was colder than here. In Southern California, it's like a hundred degrees, and it sucks.
But on the bright side, gardening means that there are hoses nearby, and I could spray at least my arms with it.
When we were almost to the outdoor science lab, which Lena explained we were going to use to examine the garden soul, I asked, "Hey Lena? Is there a pool in this town?"
She answers with a curt nod. "There's a pool in the pack territory. It's behind the pack house. We use it-and clean it-everyday."
She drags me toward the outside science lab, a large shack, with windows and sinks and people. It was hazy and moist inside, and there was a small fan in one window that was blowing cold air.
The science teacher was at the front of the room, handing out microscopes, and two jars of wet dirt, to each pair of students. There was a table at the back which was completely unoccupied, and I thanked God that it was in front of the fan.
I yanked my arm back, and bolted for the window seat, and Lena laughed as she came over. The science teacher seemed to not bother with roll call, and I wasn't complaining.
She passed the jars and equipment to our table last, and went to the front of the room.
"Okay, everybody. Today we will be listing the differences between garden soil, and the soil that I took where a garden was not involved. We will be comparing the two, and you have to make a statement on organisms, quality, and variation for the soils."
She hands out observation papers, and goes to sit back down at her desk. Lena takes one of the jars, opens it up, and puts some of it into a slide.
She starts examining the soil, and writes down her observations on her sheet. She reads it to me, and guides my hand to where the lines are, and I write down the same thing.
Apparently by the end of class I was in a sort of mental debate. Did garden soil have more nutrients, or normal soil?
One one hand, normal soil had unused nutrients, which worms and stuff go through, and since there were no plants there to use it up, it always had a supply. And people don't put pesticides in dirt they won't use, so that means that the soil has organisms and bugs and worms still healthily living there.
But on the other hand, fruits and vegetables have nutrients in them, and some the plants can die and decompose in the garden soil, making it healthier. And since people put fertilizers in gardens, that might add some extra stuff in there.
Maybe tomorrow I could ask her, because now it's seriously bugging me.
The rest of the day was...okay. Being introduced to classes, school food, Latin class, etc.
So when the final bell rang and my last class stopped, I practically ran out the door, dragging Lena with me to her large Ford truck.
She started it up, and as she drove away from the school, I asked, "Lena, what do you look like?"
I really did wonder it. I knew that she was tall, lean, and had hair cut along her jaw line, but that was it.
"Well," she says, turning a corner. "I have short blonde hair, pale skin, green eyes, a small nose, and I have an arrow shaped birthmark on my collarbone, pointing towards my heart.
I laugh at her description. "I will from now on call you Arrow," I announce, and she laughs.
She turned the radio on. Raise Your Glass, by P!nk came on, and I practically screamed.
There were people from the pack behind us. I got an idea, and opened the window. I unbuckled my seatbelt, and sat in the window, my legs inside but everything else.
I climbed onto the top of the car, and sat down, my legs dangling into my side of the windshield. Arrow looks at me in horror, and after some very determined pointing, she turned up the radio.
I smiled to myself. I took a deep breath, and started singing.
"...just get dizzy!
Why so serious?
So raise your glass
If you are wrong,
In all the right ways!
It's all I've every known!
We will never be never be
Anything but loud!
And really pretty!
Dirty little freaks!
So wont you
Come on and come on and
Raise your glass!
Come on and come on and
Raise your glass!
Slam slam oh hot d***
What part of party
Do you not understand?
I wish you'd just freak out!
Can't stop comin' in hot
I should be
Locked up on the spot!
It's so on right now!
Party crasher!
Penny smasher!
Call me up
If you want gangster!
Don't be fizzy!
Just get dizzy!
Why so seriouuusss?"
I finish the rest of the song just as Arrow pulls into the subtle forest path, and wobbles down the hill.
I look behind me, and see that the occupants of the cars behind us were laughing at my performance. I smile, and lay down on top of the cab of the truck.
The metal was hot to the touch, and I sigh as Arrow pulls into the clearing of the pack house. Time to start training.
