Chapter One

The windows were frosted up with delicate icicles; occasionally a perfect snowflake would appear on the windowsill to accompany the ice. The ice would create a crackling noise as the cold wind hit it in the morning breeze and it reminded Courtney that it was the holiday season. Courtney wrapped herself in a blanket and sipped on her hot cocoa as she watched the snow fall gracefully outside her bedroom window.

It was Courtney’s favourite time of year, the family came to visit, and everyone was always full of cheer. Courtney never lost that love for the unwrapping of presents on Christmas morning, not in her whole nineteen years. She will always be one of those people that get overly excited for Christmas, until the day she dies.

She was modest though, whenever someone asked her what she wanted she would tell them nothing and leave it at that. She didn’t want people fussing about over her, it wasn’t her thing.

It was Christmas Eve today and the air had a certain Christmas buzz about it. Courtney had bought all the Christmas presents for her family so there wasn’t any rushing around for her today. She had driven home to her parent’s house three days ago to be with them for Christmas. She had missed them all so much while she had been living in New York attending college.

Her mother and younger sister were rushing around for last minute shopping at the mall and her dad was busy in the kitchen cooking for tonight’s dinner when relatives came over to join them. He insisted Courtney didn’t chip in so she sat in a clump on the lounge bored and alone.

“Why don’t you go out and enjoy your day, sweet heart? Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine.”

Courtney went to protest but stopped herself and agreed that maybe she should go out for an hour or so. She sighed, shrugged on her winter coat, slipped on her boots and left the house, heading for who knows where.

Courtney finds herself at the least place she wanted to be today, the mall. She goes in anyway, the Christmas carols are playing on the speakers quietly and it seemed cheerful and exciting. She walks around scanning the stores, maybe looking for an extra perfect gift she may see for someone.

Courtney is lost in thought and too busy scanning the shelves when she knocks into someone and starts to fall face first towards the ground. Luckily enough, someone catches her before she hits the polished floors and lifts her safely back up.

“I am so sorry! Uh, thank you.” She blushes as she gains her balance and the person’s hands fall back to their sides.

When Courtney finally looks up, she finds herself instantly blushing. Her palms are sweaty and her breath catches in her throat. She is staring at the most beautiful human she had ever seen. Her eyes had locked with the one and only Justin Bieber.

She couldn’t believe her eyes, he was right there. She looked up to admire his hair all gelled up, his sparkling hazelnut eyes burning into hers, his small, cute smile, just making his dimple visible.

“Are you alright?” He breathes his Canadian accent singing in her ears.

Courtney manages a nod, her blush still remaining on her face. Justin smirks and chuckles lightly when reality hits him.

“You know who I am, don’t you?” He laughs.

His laugh is so inviting, she hadn’t heard such a beautiful sound in her whole entire life. All she wanted to do was be held by him, his strong arms comforting her. She shook away the silly thought, like that was going to happen.

“Yes, of course I do.”

“Are you a fan?”

She nods, “I do like your music, yes. You’re so much more perfect in person.”

It was out of her mouth before she had realised and her eyes widen in shock. Had she really just said that? Her blush deepens and her eyes dart to her feet in embarrassment. Courtney is surprised when his hand cups her cheek and carefully brings her face up to look at him again.

“Thank you, but I’m barely good looking in comparison to you.”

“Very corny and un true,” she chuckles, not knowing how she is capable of talking in his presence.

“I do not lie or make false statements. I mean what I said and I know what I see.”

“You should buy a mirror then.”

He chuckles and shakes his head at her, not bothering to protest anymore. He did find her very attractive though, he wasn’t lying. He liked the way she was always blushing around him, her cheeks rosy, lighting up her face. The little freckles scattered across her nose, the way her chestnut hair flowed and the way her green eyes sparkled when she looked at him...

He was captured by her beauty and didn’t want to just walk away from her.

“What’s your name?”

“Courtney,” she mumbles, barely audible.

“Well Courtney, can I help you with your Christmas shopping?”

“I’ve already bought all my Christmas presents, I’m here passing time.”

“Well would you like to help me find a gift for my mum?”

Her eyebrows raise at the question, she’s astonished that he wants her help. This had to be some kind of crazy dream, someone had to pinch her and wake her up. Although she didn’t want to be pinched, it was a good dream.

“Okay,” Courtney brushes her hair from her face as she talks, “What did you have in mind?”

He grins at her and puts his hand to his face in thought, “I don’t know yet. You’re a girl, what do you think I should buy for my mother?”

“Are you using me?” she laughs, joking playfully.

“Of course not Courtney, well, maybe a little bit. But I do want your company, even if it means you falling over every now and again.”

“It was one time and it was your fault.”

Courtney’s arms cross over her chest as she rolls her eyes at him. She liked his playful side; he never failed to make people laugh. More so in person, people didn’t give him enough credit for his humour.

“What about a bracelet? What’s your price range?” She asked before realising it wasn’t any of her business to know, “I mean, if you don’t mind telling me.”

He smiled, “Anything, I don’t really have a limit.”

Courtney gulped at the thought of his money. It made her nervous. She wasn’t one to care about fortune and fame; she didn’t care about it one bit. Still, as much as she tried, the thought made her feel sick. She wasn’t rich, nor was she famous. She was a nobody by his side, just another shadow.

“Alright then, let’s get started.”
