Part Two

"And we used paint to draw pictures and the teacher let us try the apples. We had to lick it and tell her how it tasted," Arden said breathless as he climbed up the stairs to his parents townhouse.

"How did it taste?" Eden asked as she shifted the little boy's bag on her shoulder and pulled her keys out.

"It was gross," Arden laughed. "I told her I only liked the apples my mommy cut for me."

"I hope you were being polite."

"I said no, thank you teacher."

"Very good, my dove," Eden smiled proudly at her baby as she pushed the door open and the little guy ran in like a hurricane.

"Dad is in the kitchen," Eden called after him. "Go wash your hands first."

"Okay!" Arden said as he ran up the set of stairs in the living room. Eden watched him until he was at the second floor to make sure he didn't tumble down the stairs. Once she was sure he had made it up, she dropped his bag by the sofa and headed for the kitchen.

"Come here," Alec looked up as he scented Eden walking in. He stood by the kitchen island and chopped up some fresh dill. He still wore his button down shirt from work and the little stain on his sleeve made his wife frown.

"Try this," Alec held up the wooden spoon.

"You stained your shirt," Eden eyed the spot as she approached him slowly. "That's my favorite shirt."

"I thought my blue shirt was your favorite?" Alec smiled.

"I like everything you wear," Eden took a step closer and put the wooden spoon in her mouth. Alec waited for her eyes to light up, but as he watched Eden's frown grew deeper.

"What?" He asked.

Turning around to the sink beside her, Eden spit out the red sauce her husband had cooked up.

"What is that?" She demanded you know, whipping her mouth.

"I added cardamom," Alec lifted the spoon to his nose and took a big sniff.

"Why?" Eden reaches for the water.

"Because you like it!" Alec said, confused by the girl's reaction.

"That taste so bad," Eden shook her head. "I don't even want to smell it."

"Babe, it's not that bad."

Eden pinched her nose, "Please take it away."

Alec dropped the spoon into the soup pan and wiped his hands in the dish towel. His green eyes narrowed slightly as he watched Eden.

"What?" Eden asked.

"Are you really that bothered by the smell?"

"Yeah, it's gross," Eden sighed. She was about to turn away when her eyes snapped up at her husband. " I am not pregnant!"

"You could be!" Alec pushed. "You're sensitive to smells. You lost your appetite. You were crying in your sleep the other night!"

"I'm not pregnant!" Eden denied once more. "We talked about this."

"Just take a test."

"No!"

"Why not?" Alec couldn't understand.

"Because I can't be pregnant!" Eden threw her hands up in the air. "We can't have a baby, Alec. You know that. I don't want to take a test and sit there and stare at the negative result."
