My alarm clock rings at 6 am so that I have one hour to get ready and eat breakfast. All to make myself presentable my very first day. If I understand it correctly then I'm meeting Anna down in the stable at 7 am to help her feed the horses, and after that at 8 am I have the meeting with Mr. and Mrs. Falk. I grab a bowl from the middle shelf in my kitchen and pour some Coco pops and milk in it, take a spoon and sit down at my small dining table to eat. I'm really nervous thinking about the meeting, I've never been a fan of them because I always imagine the worst like they realize that I was not the right person for the job and they will send me back home, or maybe they are mean and cruel or stuff like that.
The clock shows 6:55 and I decide that now is a good time to head down to the horses so that I won't be late. Getting down without making a sound is impossible in this creaky staircase, every step I take gets louder and louder. At the very end when I enter the stable I see Anna beginning to feed the horses.
"Hey are you Anna?" I extend my hand for a proper greeting. She shakes my hand.
"Yes, I'm her. And you must be Jolene." She smiles.
I smile back. "Yes I am. Where do we start?" I look around at the horses and see hay bags outside their stalls.
"We start with giving them their hay and then we give them their concentrates."
"Okay, is there a special order or can I start at the other end and we meet up in the middle?" I ask
"We can start at the ends that's fine." She assure me.
"Alright then let's get these beautiful creatures their food." I begin walking to the other end of the stable to feed the first horse, Atticus. A grey horse with black mane and tail and very kind eyes. I've never seen such a stunning horse. He seem shy but after a minute or two he comes up to me and let me pet him before I give him his food.
The sound of horses chewing is the most peaceful sound in the world and I could listen to it all day. When I've feed the last horse there are a few more minutes before my meeting with the owners, so Anna and I meet up in the middle and she said I could ask her anything I had in mind.
"I could not resist but notice the grey horse over there, Atticus, I believe his name is." Anna nods. "He's really stunning." I say looking at his stall.
"Oh yes he is. He has kind of a sad story actually. Robbie saved him from some really bad people last year that did not treat him well, he was skinny and had bruises and cuts all over his body. When Robbie saw this he felt he had no choice but to save him from those people, and to his surprise Atticus could really jump. He saw him jump over the fence around a smaller paddock that he was in at the beginning, and clearly showed that the only thing he wants is to feel free." I look with sympathy in my eyes at Atticus while hearing Anna tell his story. She continues. "Anyways, He's never allowed anyone bur Robbie to ride him, but he tolerates me to lead him in and out from between the stable and the field." She tells me.
"Wow. I've never meet a horse with such a story before, I'm sad he had to go through that no horse should. But glad to hear that he feels safe here." I say.
I look at my watch and see that time has flown by. "Holy moly what time runs fast sometimes, I need to go. I don't want to be late for my meeting." We both laugh.
"Good luck with that." She still laughs.
"Thanks. Will I see you afterwards?" I ask
"Yes you will." She gives me a reassuring smile. "We have a job to do after all" She jokes and we laugh some more.
Knock knock. I stand outside the main house nervous to my bones. I know I haven't done anything because I've just started, but right now that's not really helping my nerves. The door flies open and I get startled and take a step back.
