A quiet hush fell over everyone as Worthy stepped out onto the stage in Xin Kao Dai. He searched the crowd for Dawson but he couldn't see his younger brother.

"And here we have the fine specimen of a half cat-half boy" said the man behind him. "Let's start at twenty silver pieces." Worthy groaned as the crowd started yelling numbers.

"Stop" said a figure from the back of the hall. Everyone turned to look at him. "I bid sixty gold pieces." The crowded were shocked.

"Well, I do seventy" said a man with a big beard.

"Eighty."

"Ninety."

"One hundred."

"One hundred and ten."

"One hundred and eleven."

"One hundred and twelve." The bearded man shook his head.

"I'm out."

"One hundred and twelve gold pieces to the man at the back" said the man behind Worthy.

"Oh, and I'm no man" said the bidder.

"Then what are you?" He stepped out from the shadows.

"They don't call me Shadow for nothing" she said. Worthy thought he saw Jolt. Shadow didn't speak like that, so someone else must be there. Worthy was thrust to Shadow, who tossed him at Jolt. Jolt was dressed like a servant and was wisely creeping out of sight.

"Idiot" said Shadow. "Do you know how much this is gonna cost us?"

"One hundred and twelve gold pieces" said Worthy.

"And our trust in you" said Howl, who was standing behind Jolt. As Worthy was marched out he saw several people looking his way, staring at the groupe of red-cloaked figures who were slowly joining their party.

"Stop" said the man at the gate. "One hundred and twelve gold pieces, please."

"No" replied Shadow, kicking him with the heel of her shoe.

"Ouch!" he cried.

"See ya!" said Jolt as they all ran off. They headed for the docks and ran onboard a boat, but the bearded man and several other large men waited on the boat. Shadow cried out as Jolt punched her. The bearded man grabbed her by the arm and pulled her towards him. Worthy and the other Redcloaks attacked but did nothing to get Shadow back, just self defence against the trained warriors. Worthy yelled for Shadow to strike him and come but Jolt elbowed him. He didn't understand. Shadow was standing right there. Her dark eyes watched him go as she stood being defended by the guards.

Later at the Torch, Worthy sat with Jolt at a table. He looked to where Talon was sitting alone. He beckoned her over.

"Why didn't any of you try to save Shadow?"

"She didn't need saving" said Jolt flatly.

"What do you mean?"

"She betrayed us" replied Talon, a tear in her eye.

"She wouldn't dare."

"She did dare."
