Skye’s POV

Kenny and I walked side by side, laughing at each other's jokes and occasionally throwing snowballs at one another. I was thankful my dad kept his word and never came home last night, or sneaking out would have been impossible.

“Okay, okay, how about this one, are you a parking ticket? Because you’ve got FINE written all over you!” Kenny laughed at his own bad pickup line, I however, looked unamused.

“Do those actually work on girls?” I asked him, I mean seriously!? That was the worst one yet! He laughed and then held his finger to his chin as if he was thinking. We had reached Stark’s Pond and were just walking around killing time before we had to head to school. Usually in the mornings I would eat breakfast with Craig and Tricia, but I could skip just this once.

“Well usually the girls are pretty easy. Not that you are! I mean not that I'm hitting on you! Not that I wouldn’t hit on you! I just- well I-” Kenny kept rambling on, waving his hands in the air before rubbing the back of his head. The look of frustration and embarrassment swiped across his face, throwing apologies into the mix. I began laughing hysterically.

“Kenny, it's okay, I know what you mean.” I told him, trying to calm him down. He let out a big sigh of relief and smiled.

“How about, it’s a good thing I have my library card, because I am totally checking you out!” I said while making guns with my hands doing the ‘bang bang’ signs. Kenny stopped walking, at first I thought he was upset or something, but then he began to crack up. Soon I joined him in his laughter. I seriously had never had so much fun with someone other than my siblings. He wiped a tear from his eye and straightened up.

“Skye, you're hilarious!” My cheeks warmed up as he spoke, he came over to my side and we continued walking.

“So, what do you like to do for fun?” I asked him, he thought for a moment before speaking.

“Well, I like to sing and play guitar. I write my own songs. I also like to work out every now and then,” He explained, he looked down at me and smiled, “what about you?” He asked. I thought for a minute before I started talking.

“I like to read and draw, baking is fun too. I bake for Craig and Tricia all the time.” I told him happily. He hummed in response and we stopped walking to look at the sun slowly rising. The night sky was now mixed in an endless swirl of yellows, pinks and a shade of orange. I sighed at how beautiful it was.

“You’ll have to bake me something then.” Kenny spoke softly, still admiring the sunrise. I nodded my head to signal that I heard him.

“So, besides you and Karen, do you have other siblings?” I inquired, his lips thinned, it looked like he didn’t really want to talk about his family. He opened his mouth then closed it, then opened it again.

“I have an older brother named Kevin, but he’s a useless alcoholic. He left a while ago, so I don’t know where he is now. My parents are recovering meth addicts. We used to be really poor, but my dad finally got a job as a mechanic, I actually work with him. So we moved out of our shitty house and moved into the one across from you.” He explained quietly, he had a somber expression on his face. I was hoping that he wouldn’t ask me about my home life, I knew it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t tell him, but I couldn’t tell anyone.

“What about you? Any siblings out of school or anything?” He turned to look at me, his hair blew in the wind. I looked down at my feet, my hair blew in front of my face.

“Just Tricia, Craig, my dad and I. Mom passed away three years ago.” I couldn’t tell him any more than that. I sighed knowing that when I got home from school today, my dad would be there. He probably hadn’t found a job yet, the only reason we picked the house we moved into, was because it was insanely cheap.
