I couldn’t shake of the nerves when I woke up. It hit me like a brick wall that I would be performing tonight in front of loads of people. I’d be insane not to be scared but I was anxious.

I looked at the clock and saw the big hand move to twelve as the little was on seven. I heaved a sigh and threw my duvet off me and swung my legs out of bed.

I hadn’t got a good night sleep since I was worrying so much but it was nothing compared to how April was feeling. She’d called me last night just going crazy about how the play would be.

There was a knock on my door as I made my bed. I turned my head and in came Maria.

“Hey,” she smiled and placed her thin hands on her hips, “you okay?” She asked and I nodded.

“Where’s Joe?” I asked and went over to my wardrobe. Maria scratched her head and gave me a sorry look. “He’s gone out and won’t be able to go to your play,” she said slowly and my shoulders slumped. This was normal now that Joe would disappear so early and return quite late. I didn’t really expect him to be at my performance.

“But hey,” Maria chimed cheerily and sat down on my bed, “I’ll be there to watch you.” She grinned and I did too. A genuine one. Things haven’t been too great, not with Maria and Joe so I didn’t want to taint the caring relationship me and Maria had.

“I know you will,” I say and walk out my door to the bathroom.

There’s a good thing and a bad thing about this day. The good thing was that all my lessons were cancelled for the day. The bad thing was, it was all for the play preparations. The Drama students were in the huge assembly hall, setting up the stage for the scenes that would be acted out tonight.

I watched April run on and off the stage while my costume was being fitted on me. In front of me was Lucas all dressed up and reading his lines. He wasn’t showing any sighs of nervousness.

“Great, you look perfect.” I jumped and turned to find April fiddling with my hair and looking me up and down. I put a hand on my chest a sighed. “You scared the living daylights out of me, April.”

“I’m sorry,” she squeaked and scurried off again.

“You seem tense,” I jumped again and spun around. It was Lucas with a smile curving on his lips. “What is it, ‘Scare Ava day?’” I said and rolled my eyes.
