Well I wouldn't say 1840s in Norway is the "middle ages" as you put it. Makeup existed in my time. Maybe not as extensively as I've seen it in your world, but it still existed. We certainly knew about it. Some of it I actually created myself when I changed my dress. I thought the color scheme worked better. ;)
