Richie Betelgeuse Tozier was born in the year 1002 and his life was nowhere near perfect . With parents who hated him , he ended his own life by hanging himself at the barn when he was just sixteen years old . You'd think that that was the end . . . except it wasn't . He became a " civil servant " in the Netherworlds for committing suicide and was forced to work there for eternity . By refusing, he became a demon , a form of bio - exorcist . He enjoys his new afterlife by scaring and killing humans , being a very mischievous demon . But deep down , he's lonely because he's invisible and just wants to be seen by the living . But if a living person says his middle name three times in a row , Beetlejuice will finally be seen .
